But if you have German plates on a LHD westy, most passing police cars will assume you are a tourist, unless they have a cause to stop you.

Ah, gotcha. Yep, if they fit all the other requirements, then they would be legal. There's nothing says they have to be flat plastic rather than pressed or whatever.
