But tape over other joints, too - see if they're the cause. Door shuts. Gutters. Grille edges. Pop/Hightop seals. Everything possible, one at a time.

I tried the anti droning mats. Noise levels went down but then I couldn't hear the wife so had to take them out again..

Not bull, it's quite easy to achieve when you've got a Passat ADY motor installed, highest GPS speed so far is 168kph.
It might make 175kph.
I don't go there too often as it gets through some fuel at those speeds.

I used to have an annoying wind noise... turned out to be the little opening quarter light windows. Didn't seal very well against the rubber. Tightened the screws and it was fine

I have the same problem. On my van it seems to be coming from the B pillar door shut and the rear edge of the door window. There is quite a large gap between the door and the B pillar (7mm?) and I will try sticking a bit of something in to see if that helps but could wind deflectors such as http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details. ... parent_id= work?

How do you distinguish road noise from wind?.
At over 50 it's a hell of a din.

IIRC the M5 has a three mile section of very quiet tarmac.

I thought I had gone partially deaf when we went on it for the first time

They are T25s they make wind-noise (and rain noise!)due to their flat screens and the sharp edges at the front of the doors... obviously some people are quite deaf

But i do like the various exploits to minimise it.

The Velle hinge-lines internal baffles do seem to come highly recommended.

The rear of the door noise can be very distracting, so door fit, window fit to scrapers and channels and the channels to the door as outlined in latest Bentley sound a first port of call

Not sure about the GoWesty rain deflectors, maybe.. there are several designs of these, some cheap and a bit of a nasty fit and some better I believe

Well I can defrost say the velle door edge rubbers do work, I took all mine off when it went to paint, and didn't put them back on straight away, there is a real difference !
As for the window deflector things, the ones with the bit that goes all the way down the front edge of the window ( where it don't even open) make more noise than no window deflector..... Threw mine away that came on the velle, and put the original "Aeroflot" ones from JK back on....theyappear to make no difference to the travelling noise but stop the rain coming in when the window is down when sleeping ....

The other big difference was the plastic front gutter trims, when I put those back on it also cut the wind noise, but more interestingly reduced the amount to spray on the door windows when traveling over 60mph

All I can say is the whistle stops and door channel seals fitted to the California/Atlantics and I presume other high end models make them an almost silent drive (in terms of wind noise) at 60mph. The 2.1 petrol engine in mine, combined with those factory extras give cab noise levels around the same as my new shape Beetle. We can talk at a normal level without any issues.

I did have an opening 1/4 light that used to whisle before i made adjustments to the closer and I suspect the aerial on the pillar could also be a contributer.
Temporarily taping up the various door and panel gaps is the easy way to pinpoint the issue.

but you mostly knew that.

Mine whistles as well, it comes from the passenger side and sounds like it is from the aerial mounted near the windscreen on that side.

I tried to fit whistle stops to my early van and because the body doesn't have the necessary raised areas for the legs to sit on I just couldn't get it right so that the door closed without trapping the seal. Sold them on.

I don't get whind noise in my old 83 van but I do get road noise. i.e the noise of the wide tyres.

After all the wheel arches, cab steps are only 1mm thick with a bit of underseal on them

Oh and also if I have the bottom lever all the way to the right (air directed at screen and not at feet) there is a great deal more wind/whistle noise. If I move it to 2/3rds to the right (mine is marked with a red line) the noise stops and I get plenty of air to both screen and my feet.

That is the largest generator of noise on my van too. Drive with it shut most of the time.
