Aidan told me this week he uses 75W90 Semisynth GL4/5
He's the expert but I'm sure I read before should be GL4 and not GL5

I thought you filled it up until it dribbles out of the filler plug, 4,5 litres??

Yes^^^ but it has to be level for this which is not as easy as it sounds, 4L for a 4 speed, not sure about a 5 speed.

confusingly Brickwerks fact sheet lists it as 3 litres... GL4

Not really. That's a petrol engine. Bentley gives the gearbox oil capacity as 3 litres for petrol gearboxes and 4 litres for diesel gearboxes - both filled to 15mm below the filler hole. I assume the capacity difference is due to the difference in the input revs coming from petrol and diesel engines - different revs mean different gearbox ratios to get similar speeds on the road. Probably means the gearbox internals in a petrol gearbox are smaller and need less oil as a result.

imho the fill figures from VW are wrong, the gearboxes sit at different angles in the petrol and diesel vans, with the petrol being nose down, VW went with a lower fill on the petrol box to help with the cold shift change 1st to 2nd which is baulked by the oil when it is cold hence they all are a bit slow on that shift first shift of the day, just be slow and careful with it, next shift will be fine. Low level in a petrol box means less oil in the diff housing and the crown and pinion are the most expensive bits so need the oil for protection
I say 4 litres for all 2 wd boxes regardless of engine, but you can only get a measured amount into an empty box on the floor otherwise fill to overflowing when level will mean there is more oil than recommended but better too much than too little, you may get a little over fill coming out of the breather hole and making the front of the box damp

Hi iv taken gearbox out of my 1.7d 4 speed as I needed to replace the oil seal, iv drained old oil and refilled with carlube ep90 hypoid gear oil . 4.55l/1gal iv come on here to find out how much I need to put in as twice as much came out but after some reading on here it sounds like iv put enough in but wrong stuff can anyone advise me please

When I 1st changed mine far more than 4.5 came out also!

read posts properly?? .... I did, but just wanted to add what BW quoted . Nice to know the ' why ' as well as the quantity . I wouldnt have known the angle differences between Diesel and Petrol, but in all honesty just changing whats in there is the most important thing, gear oil has to cope with extreme sheer forces and im sure after 25 years it wont be at its best !!

Thank goodness our vans dont use the Mini ( Austin ) method of combined engine and gearbox oil ! that wasnt the best idea ever !
