If you do decide to take it to a mechanic have a think about providing them with a rebuild kit from brickwerks to do thejob properly
You cant just buy gaskets from the local motor factor and so if they damage the main gasket they will likely bodge it back or worse tell you its knackered as you so often hear

OK, ere we go then...flap is open. When accelerator is pressed, just a little cloud of vapour and a wheezing sound? Hang on (excuse numptyness), is this with engine running?

No do it without the engine running
Use a torch you should see a jet of fuel each time you openbthe throttle
This assumes you have petrol in the float chamber so check the filters first

Got it. Yes there is a healthy squirt of fuel there on acceleration....

Ok but could still be a blocked jet
If this only happened after running low on petrol this is most likely
Suppised it wont pull away if the accelerator pump is working does it stall on pulling away or just after

It literally won't pull away. Just stalls even if revved. Idles fine though...

Just a quick update. I went ahead and dismantled the carb and replaced all the parts in the Brickwerks rebuid kit. Generous spray through with a can of carb cleaner. To be honest it all felt a bit out of my comfort zone as an amateur 'tinkerer' but it all worked out fine (with the exception of managing to break one of the spring clips on a water hose). Once it was all together (I took photos just in case....), I sat with ignition key poised and thought "this won't start" but it did and its running fine.
So thanks for all your encouragement - I wouldn't have tried it otherwise...

Job jobbed
Well done, it takes a leap of faith to do that
Confidence just went up a little I think
...and the money you have saved, ought to go toward a beer

Glad you got it sorted
Slight aside = I can never understand why some folks think that when you get low on fuel (or run out) it causes crud to be "picked up" and block filters etc. To my way of thinking, the fuel tank pick up pipe is at the lowest part of the tank, where any solids will be, so it makes no difference how much fuel is in the tank ?
