Yep it's the fan relay. 450/500w fan relays are mounted on the A post. 200/300w fans use relay 5

So what purpose is the relay no. 5 then? There is one present there also!

And that metal link bar that is between the two cross headed screws with the heavy red wire on them, could that be a dropper resistor for the lower speed operation of the fans 2 speeds ?

Thats a fuse. On my US Vanagon GL the fan resistor for the lower speed is behind the headlight.

No idea.
Bridge out terminals 30 and 87 you can then tell us what it does.

Yes it is a 50A strip fuse.

Nowt! Tried it with ignition on and off. If it is a second stage fan relay perhaps 30 doesn't become live until the main relay 70A operates. Can't be a**ed to get that 70A beggar out again to jump that at the same time to check. :lol:

If you had checked it with a test light you would have seen 30 was live.
