yes, I just rechecked it. I doubled the cable size for the volt drop

That was while the heater was trying to start? I would expect it to be around 11/11.5v.
That is about it then for checking the basics - they do really need to be done before you dive into pronouncing the last rites over the ecu!

No, Not under load it wasn't. I am glad You have told me all of this though so I can hopefully do a bit of basic diagnosing myself. I have seen they do a replacement brain for it for £90 but it will probably be a £1.00 component so going to persist with the repair route. I need to sort the fuel line out properly as well as the pump is horizontal( min 15 degrees?) and the line to the heater looks a bit up and down. Where would I purchase a new glow plug from as it seems to be the only consumable. Just for future reference.

Glow plugs easily available ebay, google will throw up numerous suppliers cheaper than main stealers.
