Our one on the Scirocco was VERY dim (similar setup). A new LED cured it.

The calculations look about right to me. Maybe supply voltage a bit high. I usually tend to get around 12.5? As a few others suggested, might be worth just changing the LED first (leave original wiring) and see what happens :-)

I can't remember if mine was an actual blue LED, or a clear one with a lens... Was a long time ago :-D

Did you go to a VW dealer or use online somewhere?

Reading around the net it seems the early 80s ones were bulbs as blue LED wasnt available but later they were introduced. Guess I wont know which I have until I take it out?

ahh the joys of old electronics..! Spent the morning in the garage car-park and have managed to get the bulb working! Seems it was probably a bent pin on the multi plug thing. But now my clock, temp & fuel gauges dont work!

I've left it partially dismantled hoping they'll sign the headlight bulb off for the MOT before I start fiddling again...

sometimes a T5 looks so appealing...

It's no fun when there's nothing to fix! :P

Had the same problem on mine. Cured it by wiring a Halfords dashboard light into the main beam circuit and mounting it in a blank for a dashboard switch. I couldn't get a blue one so I used orange. Passed OK. There needs to be a visual indication but the colour isn't important.
