Mine was a P reg Golf TDI I think produced in 97 I don't know how to determine which is OBDI which is OBDII, the connector looks the same.

The connector is the same.
1997 is the year that OBD II became mandatory in the states.
My Passat ADY motor is from 97 and it's OBD I.

My engine is 1.9 tdi AHU out of a 1998 golf .

Not all the functions work on the dongle , but to be honest I'm not to bothered . As long as the diagnostics works and i get a rev counter , boost gauge etc I'm quite happy, after all its only a tenner :ok

Reading this, I will try again tomorrow. Diagnostic tool from the garage worked fine when we installed the engine. It was even showing all the data as rpm and so on. But this bluetooth thingy only worked on my mates car. I might even try it on more cars tomorrow.
