US ebay has them listed. Wanted to keep my 14" alloys but after purchase, shipping, import tax (20%) and fitting. Was cheaper to buy 15" wheels and tyres.

Some 'budget' brands can definitely be dodgy but the world of tyres is ever-changing and some of the brands that have come to prominence more recently are actually excellent. Brands like Hankook now regularly beat the big name brands in tyre tests. Maxxis are a big name in tyres other than passenger car tyres (eg. cycles and commercials) and are rapidly becoming a highly respected brand.
I have 205/70x15 Matador Izzarda on the Syncro, now over 30,000 miles old and coming up for replacement. These have been great, though I'm not sure they are avaiable in 14" sizes. I will probably replace them with Maxxis Trepador, mainly because I want a more aggressive pattern.
My other half has Maxxis tyres on her Merc SLK and these have also been excellent, dry or wet. They are useless in snow but that's probably more to do with a RWD car!

The more I think about this, the more sense it makes to stick with 14 inchers. If I go for 15s, I have to buy new wheels, as well as new tyres. Total cost around £900-1000. I'll also be left with a set of 14 inch steel wheels that I have no use for. Whereas if I buy 14 inch tyres, then I should be all done for under £400.
It's not as though I go off-roading every weekend (or ANY weekend, for that matter).

Silly question - why £5-600 difference between the two options? 15" Mefros are £60 each from BW. That's £240 for four, or £300 for five. Half of that suggested difference. Alternatively, Merc steels would come in below even that.
If anything, the 15" tyre options are going to come in cheaper than 14", since they'll be more popular sizes.

I was working on the basis that 5 x Mefros would cost around £300, plus 5 x BFG at £125 each. That's £925, before you start to add in stuff like centre caps..

Bad news - they don't seem to be available in the UK...

Could that Bay have been a recentish US import, by any chance?
