all the engine bays are exactly the same and provided all the correct tinware is fitted with the 2litre Aircooled there won't be a problem.
i dunno what billy's on about with his driveshafts and gearbox mounts waffle, driveshafts are all exactly the same apart from on automatics and while i've never actually put an Aircooled in a watervan i have put a late 5 speed gearbox in an Aircooled 2 litre bus and everything worked just fine. yes i did need the complete 5 speed linkage and gearstick and yes the rear support bar didn't line up with the chassis bolt holes but that's easily remedied.

as for wiring, it's as steve said ,nae bother at all.

but a GOOD 2 litre complete with ALL the ancilieries and tinwear might not be so easy to get a hold of cheap.

Does anybody go the other way? - I mean WC to AC - the reason I ask my 83 WC T25 looks like it has air ducting vents in the dors and back down the sills - Or Are they all like this?

I would need a couple of hours to pull the wetbox plumbing, and put it in the skip...

My back isn't what it was..

Put it this way, if your wetbox goes pop in France, I would be able to offer a 'plug and play ' Aircooled for you to continue your 'vacances', while I rebuild the wetbox,

I don't think I would ever consider changing from WC to AC simply due to the heater aspect (I suppose this also could be circumvented)
Would it fit onto the original gearbox utilising the same gearbox and clutch master cylinder / slave cylinder? Clutch Pressure Plate etc
What about compatibility of Flywheel and input shafts sizes, lengths. diameters.
What about engine mounts?
Would the throttle cable be a straight hook up?
As for wiring - One would have to connect up distributor , alternator and oil pressure switches.
Simple plumbing in of petrol pipe to lift pump and carb
What about comments made earlier about the cooling ductings around the motor?
Personally - I think the first time would be a bit more daunting than people think.

when vw went to watercooled they moved the engine this meant new driveshafts ,its anoly about 5mm from memory ( check etka)

you needed to move the engine backwards , prob about 4 inches , this moves the driveshafts, vw fitted different ones (need to confirm longer or shorter)

watercooled / Aircooled driveshafts are different lengths but a matched pair , autos are different side to side , not checked air or w/c autos. i am sure they may fit due to the play they have , but vw thought it best to change them.

bell housing , input shaft is all the same , 1600 Aircooled input shaft is the shorter one like diesels.
2.0 is the same as w/c petrols

1600 uses cable clutch , all the others are hydraulic.

the gearbox mount that bolts to the van with the rubber bush will be ok , only 2 sorts , large / small both work.

the part that bolts to the gearbox is different tho

the engine bay size is the same , Aircooled busses have a different fire wall tho and the air intake is from a duct that pulls cold air from the rear side vent . the air is sucked through the duct , along the rear chassis section to each side , thus not useing warm engine bay heat

yes you can throw one in there, im just saying to make efficient as vw did there are some mods to do.

throttle cable is a different length and is different from the chassis mount rearwards

wiring would be simple , some wires will not be needed , but this may activate the buzzer of doom on the dash.
