the AFN pump (986 or 969 last three digits) has a better camplate for more dynamic advance than the AHU or 1Z pump (985 or 971 last three digits). The voltage maps are slightly different but they are more or less interchangeable but not seamlessly so. There are some pump combinations that are more problematic but I think that's very rare.

I used a 985 series pump with modded AFN chips and it worked ok, but when I got hold of a 969 the difference was really noticeable. My advice would be to stick to the pump designed for your ECU software revision for the best compatibility.

at first: 1Z/AHU pumps are different from AFN pumps. As mentioned before, voltage mapping is slightly different, but this shouldn't give you a lot of trouble, and in most cases you can have workarounds for it, so no problem.
Afaik, both 1Z/AHU and AFN have been delivered with 10mm and 11mm pump head - in Germany it depends on emissions, I don't know about other regions...

Big changes of the pump are about output valves of pump head. You could change them, but I'd they should be calibrated afterwards...and another change is mechanical design of advancing injection time - much heavier cap on AFN pumps.

Alltogether: I was running an 1Z Pump on AFN engine with no probs for more then 30tkm, but I'm not sure about long term results...
