Nope, I don't think they do at all, but that one does look cool (no pun intended).

Have you noticed any problems with your fuel gauge AS WELL? as was mentioned earlier, the voltage stabilizer can fail on these giving spurious gauge readings.

I think I'm right in saying that if it was over reading then the fuel gauge would do the same but it dosent.
Do keep up at the back

No - as far as I can tell the gauge is reading exactly as it has done for the past couple of years.
Just looked on Wiki at checking the regulator - am I right in thinking this is behind the dash - is it a bugger of a job to do?

No, it's quite easy, all you have to do is remove the binnacle (easy) and the hydraulic fluid cap (keep it clean) then the clear plastic cover, then, with a bit of neck twisting, you can see and get the probe on the 3 legs of the regulator (output = 10V / earth = 0V / input = ~12V)

Great advice but a silly question - is the binnacle the housing for the clock/speedo/gauges - its held in by 4 screws as far as I can tell.

OK - Ive whipped the dash cover off and it looks like someones been here before me Some crusty old gaffer tape and a couple of bare connections.
To check voltage regulator am I right in thinking remove the four screws and lift the dash pod out (is this the mysterious binnacle?)

Yep, those 4 screws and disconnect the speedo cable and the multiplug front r/h corner.

Cheers Chaps - so I've ruled out a faulty regulator - definate 2v difference from either side.
Guess the next step is to check the actual running temp - gonna purchase a thermometer tomorrow hopefully and will update.
All help has been greatly appreciated

hi I read a post on here a while back, the guy checked everthing and i mean everthing,in the end he put a cooler stat in and that took his t/gauge down, did yours read half way BEFORE you changed stat, etc,or was it high before.

It used to read a tad over half way - directly to the right of the led - its still the same thermostat - then for some reason it started running at 3/4 - no other changes made other than a change of good quality vw coolant. My thought at the moment is the stats now playing up.

Mine was reading high for ages - put in an 82 degree thermostat and it's been spot on ever since.
