Trouble with doing it that way is then you create unlit areas where the strip sits.....and reflecting light will also reduce the output.

I still think the best way is more diffusion and shining the LEDS through a product designed for the job..ie; prismatic acrylic sheet or similar light diffusing panel.

I would do this myself but i'm really not bothered about the light as it is.

As a side note* I once modified a 4 bulb tungsten copy stand using this sheeting, because the individual bulbs created light hot spots on the copy image. It worked a treat and totally eliminated the hot spots whilst flattening the contrast/harshness of the light.
A stand much like this one......my point is the principals are much the same as we need with our light fittings.
