Lots of food for thoughts there everyone, thanks for taking time to reply. The fuel consumption is pretty amazing at the moment, quite surprised how good actually.

Yesterday I decided to go to the Malverns to try some real hills and see how she dealt with some faster roads. She wasn't as bad as I expected, the real steep hill near British camp she struggled to break 25mph but everywhere else she was good.

After a slight numpty moment where I cracked my head and bled everywhere, my friend ended up driving her home and we took the m5 for "speed". We actually overtook quite a lot of trucks and even some cars much to my surprise. She held 64 solidly all the way back.

Its tempting to upgrade, but at the same time its a 50k recon engine and seems solid. I realise a second hand engine would be a riskier endeavour, so maybe its safer as mentioned above to not do it until its terminal. I think I will bookmark this thread and get to know my bus a little better before I decide.

Quite honestly I ran my 1.6 for years and toured 1000's of miles around Scotland, Wales and the West Country up some very big bumps (slowly ) with 35 to 40 mpg and was perfectly happy. It is only that the engine is now getting tired that I am going to fit a 1Y. I would also say enjoy it while it is still going strong but maybe keep your eyes open for a good 1Y and get one ready, if you can, for when the day comes to change.
It is just a different attitude when you drive a 1.6 - relax and enjoy the journey:

I swapped my 1.6 d engine for an aef 1.9 from a skoda felecia and v pleased with economy and "performance".

Scrapped the felecia and surrendered existing tax which almost recovered purchase cost of the car
