side on view with the door half open would be good .but you have a few issues there,if yopu were to open the doort half way could you lift it of the roller at that point, ? you know thwere is a cut out in the upper part of the guide to allow the roller to lift and swing out, ,well obviously donnt try it there,
the runner is a bit worn and this is something you need to sort , try a few choice smacks with a hammer, the roller looks very worn like its about to split in two.as said get one from baxters, ive not got a mint picky to hand but this is from one i extended to clear wide rims, may show stuff for you

Can't budge the roller when the door is half open. The weight of the door seems to be holding it on.
i've ordered a new vertical roller tonight so will get to it soon enough. I'm not driving it at the moment as I'm doing a tidy up inside etc. I knew I was going to have to replace worn out bits eventually , this is just the start.
Does anyone do a quiet roller kit? The thought of getting in and out making that kind of noise just seems anti social. I've fitted a flush handle on the inside rear to pull it shut which is more quiet but the rollers are really loud!
I'll take another pic tomorrow.
thanks for all the help everyone.

All sliders make a noise, it goes with the territory... there isn't a kit.
It's not anti social unless you keep doing it every 5 mins.
In the summer it's always open.

noise?????
open the door fully and get a load of cloth and clean all the crap out of the lower track , while your at it check that the track is sound,no holes,
swing the door of the middle runner and support on an axle stand etc and remove the lower roller and clean it thoroughly and refit with fresh grease in the bearing, lightly lube the track ,
refit door,
clean the upper track and lightly lube it, then fit the new roller and sort that issue out, should be quieter and smoother

Fitted the new roller and gave the channel a bit of gentle tapping to straighten it up. The new roller is the same diameter front and back the old one was well worn on the inside. The new one doesn't just 'float' out of the channel but i have to make a pretty concerrted effort, lift the door slightly to then be able to 'flip' it out of the channel.
Hopwfully it will be a lot more stable?

Hmmm, it should only be possible to lift it up to swing the rollers out in one position where there is a cut out in the upper part of the rail

looking at my photos again. The roller will swing out at the 'door closed' end of the channel if it is lifted. Are you saying that the top 'rail' should physically prevent it from coming out because i doubt that is the case anywhere along its length but it is held in by the weight of the door once the door opens. Think i'm going to have to play with adjustments fi this isn't right?

yep it should only come off /out if you positionb the roller under the cut out.

ok, so I'll get round to this one day soon enough, might even measure DB before & after... but in the history of 80-90 or the brickyard has anyone designed/tested a "silent" door modification? soft close? anything?

Soft closing? Think yourself lucky your door isn't an early slam one

I should say that the simple move of replacing that single roller has made the whole plot a lot lot quieter.

You are not looking closely enough. The open door is not flush with the rest of the body and the roller carrier is significantly lower down in relation to the top rail.
Hope that helps?
