Going into that space means cutting the cross member, seriously weakening the structure, meaning mucho fabrication to regain the lost strength, and as Aidan said, IVA test and prob Q plate.
Far more cons than pro's.
Trust me, I've investigated a number of alternative solutions and there just isnt the space there.
To me, the two best solutions seem to be the Renault UN1 or inverted A4/Passat box
Oh, and just re-reading your post about altering an engine to run backwards, this'll never work as you'll just spin the bearing shells in their housings and sieze the engine in about 3 seconds flat. They have a small notch to stop them spinning when running in the correct direction, but nothing to stop them from moving when run backwards
