As said above, certainly not essential, but it does make the plumbing simpler and neater, and possibly easier to bleed (or so I've heard).

made it no difference to bleed it at all, thos who say it is are often the ones who have never had it any other way so wouldnt know !

I'm sure you're right, having never tried either, I'm just going on what I've heard.

Have you managed to get anything else done to this conversion. Just been reading through this and the rjes website as I'm contemplating something similar. Daz

Yes!

It's all going pretty slowly, moslty due to the awful weather (I'm working outside), but the Subaru engine is now in place. Hopefully post some more pics soon. All I need to do now is the new fuel supply system, throttle cable, install the wiring loom, and source/fit a new exhaust system!

Come on pull yer finger out. Suns been out all this weekend . When you've got it done I'd love to have a look at it , see if I could manage the change over. daz

Awful weather! I done mine last year in january. I was doing it untill 8 in the evening by torch light with tempratures in the minuses. Word of advise, regarding the exhaust depending how loud you want it ive got 3 boxes on it to get the noise down. Befor i had two and the noise was embarrassingly loud! It cost me about £700 for the exhaust in the end, rjes does/did a nice looking stainless one for around £600 i think.

Depends if you want it to be very quiet, or you want people to know it's Scoobyfied

I was running the turbo version, with a 2.5in pipe and a single large Simpson silencer, it was very quiet.

So I built a 3in stainless pipe straight through - that was very noisy - horribly so....

I've now added a small silencer, it's loud, but not shotgun loud

Well mines not silent. When you give it a foot full i get the nice tone of the scooby lump. Tick over it hardly sounds like its running. But then again you wouldnt here it over the frigging noisey fuel pump!

So what was the cost of the end result???

Well for mine total cost including buying the donor car and money i got after scrapping it ect it came in around £2700. I done all the work myself and bought everything from rjes including pipe work, air intake hose, coolent manifold reversal. Money well spent in my eyes.

I got a bit carried away with mine and spent closer to £4000, still working on it - think the bill currently is around £5k

Even though I managed to make back the £450 I spent on the Scooby - bought the whole car by flogging bits on ebay

I've rubber mounted mine - along with the fuel filter too...

Oh nice. Im definatley going to try that. Mine drives me mad and is all i can hear in the cab when stationary with the engine running. Cheers for that.

Mine came with some nice stainless brackets from Merlin Motorsports.

I'd have to take your word for that - we were in Portugal for 5 days - the sun was definitely out there!

Hoping to get something done this weekend. I have the same rubber mounts from ebay - as well as a rubber sleeve between the mount and the pump - hopefully will keep things quiet.

Still not sure about the exhaust - was thinking of just getting the RJS system, but they're not in stock, and no date for when they will be...
Was considering getting something welded up using the Scooby manifold and the original VW box as a temporary measure - any thoughts?
