Thanks all for your input. Here's the info regarding the engine work, an email from Jon at s'spares.. Just to add, he seems like a really genuine and helpful guy, and I'm not doubting the quality and integrity of his work, but it would be good to get others opinions on which route to possibly take:

Please see enclosed the information for engine options on the 16.
 
I have put in 2 choices the first for a complete correctly built Mtdi engine with all new parts that will really deliver in terms of useable power and suit the current tall gearing of the truck.The other choice is for basically replacing the block with like for like ( still doing headgaskets etc) plus a re-con turbo.
 
Please let me know if you are interested in the 16 and I can pass over your offer or if you prefer I can pass over the owners contact details.

And then the following specifics regarding the work:

To remove existing damaged 1.9 Mtdi engine and fit a High specification 1.9 Mtdi turbo diesel engine with intercooler.
 
New Mtdi engine spec:
 
New: indicates a brand new unused part
Used: a part that has been previously fitted
Recon: a part that is used but re-furbished to as new condition
 
1.9 Tdi turbo diesel engine used. ( under 100,000)
New Mechanical Bosch diesel pump
New head gasket
New cam belt
New waterpump
New  oilpump
Recon turbo or new hybrid turbo
New stainless exhaust
New flywheel and clutch
New thermostat
New intercooler
New oil seals as required
 
Target:
Power 110hp or 120hp with hybrid turbo
Torque 200-250NM
 
Parts required:
 
• Engine block @£500
• Bosch pump @ £1100
• Head gasket kit @ £85
• New water pump@ £45
• Oil pump@£85
• Cam belt kit @£55
• Intercooler kit @£500
• Recon Turbo @ £450 0r Hybrid @£780
• Exhaust kit stainless @ 400
• Flywheel and Clutch @ £250
• Misc @£250
 
Total Parts @ £3720 these prices include VAT
 
Labour:
 
To remove engine, build new engine up, fit intercooler kit, fit new engine, tune and shakedown. @ £2650 plus VAT
To remove existing damaged 1.9 Mtdi engine and fit a used long block engine using parts already fitted to engine, I have specced a recon turbo with this build as the turbo is worn.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but £16k +£6k.ish for the motor must be having a giraffe

Wasn't Simon selling his all singing and dancing ex. Finish army 16" hightop for 12k recently ??

IMHO (for what it's worth)!! I would take great strides in the opposite direction.

I forgot to mention I also have a diesel 2wd westy with a pop top for £1850. You could combine the two vehicles sell what's left and end up with a Syncro westy for around £7500.

Small world, I know the owners, they live in my village. (500 homes & 5 syncros )
Nice people, I was offered this van a few months back but as I despise Hi-tops had to pass.
Its just back from overlanding to Iran & I think has a fresh(ish) MOT.

Yeah, its a lovely spot, only 4 miles from Torbay but feels a million miles!
We're right down on the river, I keep meaning to try & organise a VW meet down there but been kinda busy the last couple (or four) months!!

Think it would make a great chilled meet....... Stokefest?

The MTDi was a beast it had Simon Baxter's hand built pump on it, I built the gearbox for it for a 5 Cylinder Audi engine but Russel persuaded Ian 4 cylinders was the way to go

Out of interest...what else is in there to make it worth more than £13000? What sort of spec list does this van have?

I Have recently seen an "original" 14" Westfalia Syncro get "refurbished" that genuinely depressed me to the point I had a sinking feeling in my chest.... That van is not like the yellow one and is not blatantly rammed full of filler etc... Hence the £13,000 offer with the MTDI and full refurb rather than some dog with a depressing "original" engine and is worth 5p....

It sounds like that's what Jon was talking about to me, and according to him that's why the engine went.. So what would you do to it now? Do you think the spec above that Jon quoted seems like a good idea?
