I don't know if it is too late, but ...
Your'e welcome here in Central France...
Shade, hookup, and big workshop..
By the way, I think it sounds ignition related to me..

Hi all thanks for all the posts,
Right this is the update, I decided to chance it, got on ferry and have ma the 430 miles to saint julien des landes near Nantes la guionnarare (nice campsite if anyone interested)Right hear goes.
Done 310 miles with no problems at all.
First 200 miles I kept it at 50 then went up to 60mph after that.
Last 120 miles it started to do it again but a managed to control it by letting of the throttle off and it seemed to clear itself.
Like a post said earlier exact same symptoms and gonna get some ht leads.

Hi
Seem to remember recently that someone on the forum had a similar problem, turned out to be the fuel pipe connecting the tank to the fuel filter was collapsing in on itself when demand was high. I have never seen this before myself but perhaps its work checking condition of pipe.

Good call Nic
I had this once on our Scirocco
I had to
blow down the pipe to the tank because the tank strainer was blocked causing a vacuum that caused fuel starvation. As I blew (hard) I felt the blockage clear and heard bubbles coming into the petrol tank.
Aside = I had to do this on a roughly weekly basis until I got around to getting the tank strainer out and cleaning it !

that cured a similar problem i had too, after checking and changing just about everything else first
definitely worth checking

I would just like to say thanks to everyone that gave me advice on my engine problem.
As said. Decided to go for it and she managed the 1600 miles taking us from norfolk-dover-calais-saint julien des landes-euro disney and home. Traveling at 50-55 was a bit tedious but i ended up getting 28mpg on average fully loaded with a tralor.
We had a great holiday catching up with old friends and meeting new also the weather was great. Even managed to deliver and change fuel tank with/on my mates t3 in 35c heat.
If anyone is interested the campsite we stayed at is great for adults and kids with massive pitches and really laid back easy going atmosphere well worth a stay if you fancy going to The loire region

Oh I have changed the coil and it is still doing it so am gonna order some HT leads and if that doesn't fix it may try a voltage regulator.
Thanks again to everyone for all your advice as I don't think I would have goe for it if it was for some of the comments on here and would have probably ended up staying in Calais or ging home and getting the Honda which would have sucked.

For info ... it's a good idea to save the last set of KNOWN GOOD ignition components, that way if you develope a fault after fitting new parts you can revert back to a previous set up, a System Restore if you will.

No one mentioned the most common cause for this problem. Remove fuel pipe to carb, then using a medium sized self tapping screw, screw this gently (and i mean gently) into the brass pipe on carb that is now exposed. You need to turn the screw just enough to grip the small plastic cone-shaped filter hidden inside and gently pull it out. Chances are its crudded up with limescale or other deposits.
When this filter is clogged it restricts fuel at large throttle openings (ie higher speeds) and it'll die unless you throttle back a bit. Clean the filter, replace it, reconnect fuel hose and power should once more be restored.

Just removed the tiny filter an there was a fair amount if crap in there. Hopefully this will cure it and if it doesn't it needed doing, my only thought is if I kept my foot down whilst losing power it would backfire so I would have thought it was getting fuel to make it so this. But then I'm not sure if my theory is correct. I have posted image of debris below. The filter was pretty wedged in the carb as debris was compacted.

Just took the bus for a run and after being at 60-65mph for 10-20 seconds power goes as before and if I keep my foot down it backfires but If I go with it I can stop the backfire and level out at 50-55mph, next is new dizzy and rotor arm and some ht leads. I hope it isn't the voltage regulator thingy as they are a few £££
