do they jack the insurance up much because the bus has been modified with that engine?

The buggers are so snide these days they probably can access the dvla's v5 records.

yes but if you dont tell the dvla you put a 1.9 in, then they wont know. i suppose that if the mot tester spots a turbo on it (or hears it whistling) he may say something, just put a non turbo in, its loads cheaper.

getting to your destination with an Aircooled engine gives you a sense of achievement; whereas with a watercooled you just get there a damn sight quicker!

I hear what you're say but.............

A good 2 ltr Aircooled has got a lot less things to go wrong (ie pumps, rads, hoses)and a lot more basic for home maintenance.

I have had both and at the moment watercooled, which does give you much more of those mod cons (ie heating) but there'll always be a place in my heart for those old things!

forget Aircooled, its far too modern, you could get a good steam power conversion if you like your history nostalgia, fred nibnah swears by them. get one with a towbar for your coal storage trailer.

Because theres a finite limit in making them efficient. This is why VW during the 70s petrol crisis suddenly started producing water cooled vehicles. As said here. the Aircooled lump is a wonderful piece of engineering and simple - like the Beetle with just one clock dial.

Fact is you can bore them up, whack on all kinds of gadgets but improving petrol consumption isn't so easy. I LOVE the Aircooled engine - always have but watercooled ones generally suffer less from elevated temperatures and are more efficient.

i bet by the way you describe the air cooler, you own one. its just a hitch !!!!! i dunno maybe i just dont get the air thing, i know a cult status has grew up, but there is also a austin allegro fan club!! ive also got a 1.6 a/c bay window, and we had a 73 beetle at the same time, but when it comes to long distance we go in the 1.9d t25, or me missus little 06 peugeot (watercooled) technology. . me lambretta is aircool but you have to ride em with your hand over the clutch waiting for it to seize. new bikes are = yep watercooled.. ner ner..
