Here's one for you.
I heard of a way to make all vehicles do approx 500mpg
Simply re-profile the whole country to form hills.
Put all the houses at the top and the shops, work places etc at the bottom.
Only run roads from the bottom of the hills to the tops.
So on the way to work you coast downhill doing somewhere near 999mpg, on the way home your normal consumption = average 500mpg ish.
Simple

Why not design a brand new series of vans, with more modern steering, braking and safety features. Then, just to be akward, why not bolt on the front wheels with nuts, and the rear wheels with studs?
