Mine is like that too, the battery tray is in the standard position and the battery was turned 180*, there is a bit of a compromise doing it like that though and I had to talk Russel into doing it as he wanst that happy about it.

Lloyd, I've got a similar problem with the SA and it's lpg conversion. The rubber elbow from the filter housing to the throttle body (similar part on loads of injection VW engines) has always been a bit squashed, because of the extra bulk of the gas mixer ring. The inlet c.s.a must be reduced so having a big Pipercross element from an Izuzu 3.3 diesel doesn't make any difference to performance like it should...
It's always been a bit "flat", loads of torque but no top end "zip" and the mixture goes off at full load/throttle.
I've got Neil's old Apollo so I'll experiment with that, based on what you've discovered.
Feel free to drop in (ring to say you're on the way) but not on a Friday!

Oh, now I see. I thought the tray had been moved. What is the compromise? How would Russell have preferred to do it?

Because the air filter housing intake is on the side you really want it to come from the snorkel down the air channel and into the air filter housing but it cant because the battery is in the way. Instead you have to point it downwards so it goes under and upward if you see what I mean.

Like this,

I sent him some good quality hose that could take a dunking but his concern (quite rightly too) was how exposed the pipe was being behind the wheel and the threat of being punctured by a twig or something. Anyway I talked him into it and said I would deal with it when I get it back as I had a few plans in my fragile mind. Ideally you would want it all in the engine bay out of the way but that would mean putting the battery where the petrol one is and I dont really like that.

Sorted, and should keep most of the mud out of my engine bay too :mrgreen:

As an alternative to the K&N Apollo and the problem with the side entry on the JX filter you might like to consider one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Enclosed-Cold ... 589101a179" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .

It is a cone filter in a straight through housing. I am using one on my GTi engine and it is connected up to the original diesel snorkel.

Some pictures of the filter and my set up on Brikyard at: http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/gti-c ... 71383.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

cheers

Gary, are you sure this would have enough airflow capacity for a 1900 turbo diesel. You'd be amazed how quickly for instance even a large cylindrical JX one gets blocked up in dusty conditions, such is the airflow

Clive,
the strict answer to your question is 'no'. I can't be sure of the flow capacity.

All I can say is that there has been no noticeable change in performance in going from my original Peugeot filter set up to this cylindrical one with the snorkel.

My engine is slightly bigger (2 litre) but then the diesels are turbo'd so they probably need more air. Haven't been running it long enough to find any 'service' effects - maybe some long runs across Salisbury Plain in this hot dry weather might be a test. :)

Yup, up to about twice as much. In the Pyrenees, Val d'Aran I was cleaninga JX filter daily (nightly).... and I was leading, lucky I wasn't in the wake of a leader myslef, but Pete had a massive Drott 2-stage plant filter in his dead-man locker, a good place for one it turned out.
