Thanks Pete,
might give them a try on the next engine. i had all 4 refurbed locally when i rebuilt the 2.1 for Gunther, but 1 failed almost immediately afterwards
I think the local guy runs them through an ultrasonic cleaning and flow rig, not sure he changes filter baskets etc.

Try checking out the ASNU website
http://www.asnu.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This will have HGL's website on it and also firms near you. Worth checking prices though. The nearest one to me wanted £30 per injector and that was for a batch of three sets all at the same time.

As for that report - one of 'em was flowing 35cc/sec to start with, now 54...? Wow. That was clogged. And with all the others low-mid 40s, way unbalanced. That pot would have been running very lean, so hot. You should notice a heck of a difference in the way it drives. I know I did.
The ones I've just sent (i.e. this report) were off an engine that I have stripped to rebuild - not off the engine that is currently in tthe bus. It will be interesting to get the current ones done after the engine swap has been done. Interestingly I have given the current engine a couple of tanks of Redex shots lately and noticed a bit of a difference in smoothness and pick up.

Just had mine refurbed at same place in Hull. Great service I concur.
Came back with new bits. The shell outside is rather corroded but that shouldnt matter. Its whats inside that counts.

Parts replaced.

Report showing improvement. Should help with fuel consumption and performance. No leaks so that might not be where the fuel smell is coming from. To quote AMS 'the search continues'.

Just fitted these. The old injectors were well seated, with the nose washers flush into the block holes. So much so I had to fish them out with a hook as they were stuck in there. The new ones sit a bit proud which makes the injectors a little wobbly if you push them. The noose clamp is tight to the block. I reused the large rubber washers which help clamp them in place. Should I have replaced those? If so, available from VW?

Hi.
Just got back from 2,500 miles around France. Had refurbed injectors fitted just before we went and the difference was dramatic. It was like having another gear. As last year we crossed the Cevennes twice with some pretty serious climbing to get across the two cols. Both ways we were able to use third where second would have been needed previously and it generally pulled a lot better throughout the rev range.
One thing I have learnt however is that for some reason (I don't know why) fitting the new injectors put the timing out. I decided to double check the timing the day we left (I'd only done it a few weeks before) and found it was about four degrees advanced. Setting it correctly obviously made things loads better.
Another problem from previously was that there was a pin hole in one of the inlet manifolds and so this was swapped for a spare which will also have helped. It also explains why I had a problem previously with setting the tickover. Slowly this is becoming a decent engine!
Swapping the injectors is however the best thing I have done to the engine. I wonder how many otherwise sound 2.1s are running around roughly just because of old clogged up injectors with a poor spray pattern?

I think I need to do mine. Is it a difficult job to remove them?

Nope. But corrosion can make things like the clips on the fuel hose a PITA. I cut my clips off with a junior hacksaw as they were so rusted up.

Blimey Patrick.Yours look like they have spent half of their life on the seabed.

Heh heh heh. When the donor vehicle gave up its engine 5 years ago the mechanic said it looked like it'd be used to drag boats out of the sea the way the body was corroded.

Just had mine refurbed. Sent them to the place in Hull and got them back super-quickly with a full report. Have to echo comments above about the efficiency of the service.
Haven't used them yet and the van is getting a new engine shortly so it will be difficult to make a meaningful comparison of the before and after but the report shows a marked improvement in flow rate and spray patterns so they should now have a new lease of life... along with the rest of the van

Their before-and-after test sheet is usually good for a laugh...
