Some folks like just a tiny little bit of pre-planning (our style is an outline of heading that far and back on such and such a date), other's need regimented routine (essential if you have a long way to get round) and many just like to wander without constraints.
Horses for courses.

We like to plan roughly and just have an outline of what we are doing. We mainly go to Aires de Service and have only ever found one that we could not get into as it was full beyond bursting. We love getting to Honfleur and a way further down the coast the beautiful beach at Loquirec.
A few years back we did a 5 week tour and got down as far as Poitiers and onto Iles de Re, the island just off of La Rochelle. We squeezed into the last space on a campsite on Iles de Re but I would recommend booking if you're heading that way, or at least phone before paying the toll bridge costs.
