Not all air cooleds are powerless.....mine sits quite happily at 80 if I wanted to .......gets me up the hills and yes occasionally I have to drop to 2nd gear.... :D

I do beg your pardon, I meant the TD, not mine.

1.6 TD - 51kw or 70bhp

2.0 Aircooled - 51kw or 70bhp

Mine also goes up hills though, can do 70mph (never had it on a track so of course I've never gone faster ;) ) and sometimes I've been known to use second. :D

Hi, Everything I have read or have been told says to avoid the 1.6 diesel as it is meant to be rather poor. I really doubt my budget can stretch to an 1987 variant of any type let alone a turbo diesel (if they did one!). Choosing one of these vans is proving to be a tad difficult!

Well I had a 2.0 Ltr air cooled a few years back The performance was good but ecconomy was poor. I now have the 1.6d and performance is poor but ecconomy is good. I'd buy my diesel one again over the petrol. I didn't go out with the intention of buying a diesel mine just happened and I'm pleased it did. I looked at loads before I bought mine - 90% of them are just rubish, so beware.

I'm not sure where you're looking Dave, good condition Aircolds are cheaper than fair condition Water ones???!?!?!??!?

Yep Diesels came in 1.6, 1.7 and 1.6 TD flavours.

I would suggest you get your boots on or line up your lifts or whatever and go out and see everything that is anywhere near your budget. Take your buyers guide (found Here somewhere) and don't buy the first one you see. Look for rust, check out the interiors, drive them up hills. I'm sure which ever van you get, you'll love.

Yup, and a good starting diesel in summer is not necessarily a good starting diesel in the winter - ask about that and look in their eyes as they answer :)
.. even though it might be an easy fix (glo-plugs)

I've heard the JXs can be fantastic engines Rob, when they've been run in to give good compressions and have had decent oil and filter changes regularly....

...and never been overheated, and, and....

up to a certain mileage, which may vary
