Did you get those Faust ones in OBI Gaz?

I actually got them in Praktica, but I'm pretty sure OBI have the exact same ones.

OBI does have them, I used them to paint my canoe.

Excellent, I'll give them a go if they produce the right results for you. I'll be starting on my fibreglass roof, I assume I have to key it with 600 paper like anything else but how does Rustoleum hold without fibreglass primer?

Seems quite good - I ripped off all the paint on my ~Devon roof and put a 1st coat on it the other week - A roof uses a lot of paint though

Had a look at the van today. Paint still seems a bit soft for sanding looks like it's gonna be next week...maybe

It really is a 3 week minimum as we said on the DVD. If you sand too soon it'll move like toffee and resist abrasives even if you wet surface. Thats pretty much common to all paint, it'll skin but remain soft beneath. If its baked (sun or heater) it'll set faster but normally its at least 3 weeks to be on the safe side, at which point sanding will be relatively easy.

With application, my approach has been to paint subsequent layers as and when. For instance if you're intent on getting a couple of layers on, as long as you work very fast and don't mess, you can get a second coat on the next day (paint being 'just' soft enough to let next layer bite on it) but normally I'll leave long gaps, sometimes a couple of months before I tackle it again. Sanding or flatting back can't be hurried though or you'll burn or disturb the paint.

Great thread, gonna get my van done in the next few weeks while the weathers still warm (ish) just gotta choose a colour, not sure what to go for!!

Have got all the materials and prep stuff for the van....going to get paint tonight and start the van at the weekend (weather dependent) - Have decided on Marlin Blue for the van as it is close to the original colour of the van. Will post some pics up of progress when I have started. Wish me luck!

Just don't make the common mistake of getting too excited and not doing the prep fully or properly or you will be reminded of it forever afterwards.

Yeah, nothing worse than bad prep = bad paint job....sprayed a few motorbikes, a boat, and parts of cars before so should be OK on the prep front!! Never rollered anything though, but sure it'll be fine having read the guide and youtube. I've put aside Fri, Sat, and Sun this week just for prep...

I hope you've got a band of helpers mate! When I worked it out I had done 10 full days getting mine ready for the 1st coat, and that didn't include the welding done before hand! It's amazing how long it takes with these things, there is a lot of body to do!

Blimey! OK may have to be a few more weekends after that as well then!! Although I am lucky with mine, and (as far as I can see at the moment) only has minor surface rust on it. Not in too much of a rush though, and want to do the job properly.

Had a look at your van pics, looks wicked! I'm hoping to get an equally good result on my van. What grade of wet and dry did you use to finish/flat off after the final coat? Any other tips/hints about the job?

You may find the DVD useful as it has lots of tips not in the WIKI or on You Tube and is around 45 mins long. It covers finishing, suggested grades and ways to save time. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
