I'm looking at clutches now....... VR6 seems to pop up a few times on searches instead of the golf 3 tdi version.. Are these the same clutch? Is the VR6 one better/stronger?
I have found one at eurocarparts, a sachs for £90.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350932922109? ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is this the right one? is there a downside to the VR6 clutch?..
I am also amazingly confused by TDI starter motors.. i'm getting a brickwerks starter adapter and have google searched the part numbers mentioned on that site for compatible starters, but they all look different in the pictures.... some have a hood over the cog like the jx one and some don't. Can it be either or?.. If anyone can clarify that for me i can then get searching for a well priced one
ive seen this starter

That starter might fit but looks like a Valeo offering...better sticking to bosch I reckon. Vr6 clutch is fine, vr6 passat or golf (3A) syncro would be the strongest option I believe but might be a dealer only option and then you would have no exchange part...downsides...well my clutch is heavy and makes my knee hurt...but it is a Valeo one I had kicking about, I would like to try a sach one in its place but suspect it would still be heavy compared o a JX one...at some point something will break due to the increased pressure...likely be the gearbox bracket as they like to break anyway..

Are you saying you have a vr6 clutch and it's heavy? I have a tdi one fitted now and it ok.. Was just thinking a vr6 one might be more tough.

the TDi one is fine and seems better suited to the pulse of the diesel pump from experience of those that run it even on mechanical pump, clamping force wise there is little difference
iirc Andy's research showed the golf3 TDi is the strongest 228mm clutch
VW VR6 clutch will be a hybrid beast as the VR6 was originally Audi and used a different spline input shaft I think
Sachs clutch generally has the nicest pedal feel and action of the T3 clutches imho and e, LUK is built to a price and is also the generic boxed clutches like QH and the other factors own brand stuff
it's not just the clutch though, slave cylinder pushrod and lever arm nipple condition and fork bush condition and lubrication is important for nice clutch operation, over 25 years worth of gearchanges may have caused some wear

thanks, i'll stick to a tdi one then.
collected a nice freshly zinc'd exhaust bracket along with some other bits and pieces

There are some errors here...first of all the VR6 engine was not an Audi engine...there might of been some plans for it to go in an Audi but it never did...nor did the VR5 either..the engine itself has no spline...it's an engine! all the VR6 cars and vans except the sharan were FWD or 4WD and used the 02A or a derivative of that( no 6 speed fwd box in those days unless you bought parts off Gemini) or an auto.
There was an Audi V6 engine...but they were lame in comparison...and had two heads.
The clutch is same as a G60 basically...but the flywheel is different to a 4 pot...but only because it has more holes to bolt it to the crankshaft...same ring gear, same size, no need to make a hybrid of any sort...I don't know how deep Andy went into the strength of the clutches as such but as the clamp force can't be changed much without affecting the feel at the pedal I agree but there's also the Cush drive to consider and when I was deep into 16v g60 motors on golf rallyes it was generally considered that the VR6 syncro mk3 golf had the clutch least likely to rip its middle out and visually the vr6 clutch has more, heavier springing in the centre...I have a vr6 clutch in my rallye..syncro ..250+bhp and more grunt than a diesel and its been down Santa pod a good few times without ripping the middle out with 16v g60 trying to tear it apart...
I'm using a TDi Valeo clutch...it was nearly new on the engine I bought...there is no wear on linkage issues...all new bushes etc, fresh fluid, but its heavy...

Wonder if that's just a valeo thing?. I have a tdi clutch now, and can't say it feels any different to the jx one. Or maybe northerners have weak legs...

My knee is weak...but my clutch is heavy as well...combined = bad knee.
Valeo aftermarket stuff is crap...but oddly if you buy a genuine vw clutch off vw it's branded luk but has Valeo friction material stuck to it! and could be s up plied with a sach cover as well...there is a 210mm tdi clutch fitted to some golfs as well...and as I'm using a polo 6R flywheel on my van Afn I suspect that clutch would fit a t3 as well...and the polo has a really light pedal compared to a mark 3 golf...but the friction material is a narrow band not covering the whole flywheel surface...
Lets compile a list of 228mm clutches that will bolt to a "G60" ring gear shall we....I bet there's at least 10 options on covers alone and more plates!

Think I'll still stay with the mk3 tdi clutch, to many variables frazzling my mind. I'm sure I asked simon to source one anyway.. Starter motor is the thing I need to sort, where is the cheapest place to get a Bosch version? Most places want a exchange

Just had a look on etka at clutch part numbers for a mk3 GOLF "tdi"...lot of options...Afn is different to 1z...but oddly it's smaller!
Now...what starter would you like?

That's sounds like a easy question
It's to go with the starter adapter
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t ... sions.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it lists some part numbers on that link, but I think they are Bosch numbers rather than vw.
Just want one that's fits really, can't say I prefer a particular type, I don't know the differences.
