Hi.
Try Openshot video editor. Its Free Open Source software and will run natively on Ubuntu. Ive only used it a couple of times but it seemed nice and easy to use.

It has been a day of learning..

..Frustration...but no tears..

Thanks to a new version.. of Openshot..and (at last) a proper user guide,, and some good 'how to' videos on 'the' tube..

Here is my latest..

'Ooops' in all his cinematic glory..

Hello,

Spent some time in the workshop today..

Cosy with my diesel fired Eberspacher..under test..

Image

This is a test rig.. the final result will be in my van...

It throws out 2.3 kw, with a powerful fan..and is very economical..

Image

The sharp eyed ones will see how little it consumes..at full bore.. over 8 hours..

So.. back to 'Ooops'...

Dismounted the carbs for the video..fitted the coil mount.. took off the loom.. ready for new..touched in the paint..

Image

Painted the cross pipes and so on..

Image

So now I'm ready to do the carbs demo video..

Image

Suppertime...

Cordialement,

:ok

With my carbs at base adjustments and the SDVA 034 dizzy statically timed to 8deg BTDC my engine revs really high. Any idea why this would happen? I have been reading some stuff over at thesamba and they say that you need a dual vacuum to get the idle circuit working properly. interesting stuff however it doesn't help me with my high reving engine. Throttle plate gaps set at 0.8mm.
Any help would be great.

Help is on its way.....

After posting todays deeds,,,

I shall start editing the video of 'how to' set up 2L CU Solex carbs....

So,

Having shot the first part of the 'how to carbs' video,

I then refitted the ignition system..and made up a new wiring loom..

Considering the money spent on this engine in the past I was not impressed with the standard of work on the HT leads.. :?

One shroud was broken.. with a nice crack...guaranteed misfire,,

Image

not nearly of the same quality as OE..(new one on the right)

Image

Then on to the terminals..not good..very poor contact on 2 leads..

Image

The wire which should be 'captured' by the clip is just 'stuffed up' inside..

Image

While we are on the subject.. a little tip.. is to use a second 'hat' on nr 2 plug lead..that way the airseal will sit properly in place..

Image

so... on to the loom...

Not much better than you would expect..

Image

When you build a loom DO NOT use 'blue' crush tabs.. use bare tabs.and jackets, just like VW did..8 /10 engine breakdowns are ignition related.. :!: :!:

Image

Here is the loom ..

Image

and..

Image

The cut dimensions from feft to right are:

15 cms:15 cms: 22cms: 15 cms: 80 cms: 26 cms.

So.. nearly there.. and then another of life's little joys...

The fan belt is too short...

It will go on.. but needs a shoehorn...

Saturday afternoon solution...spare belt from my van..goes on the bill...

Image

So with the fan belt tensioned and heating blower tubes in place.. you can see from my 'witness' marks how much the alternator was forced in...

Image

Image

So then I shoot 'the tuning while running' video..

and here are the last photos before preparing for packing in the crate..

Image

Image

Image

There is a smell of wild mushrooms and garlic frying in the kitchen.. the video editing might have to wait.. :rofl :rofl :rofl

Cordialement,

:ok

Hi,
Managed to sort it the 0.8mm throttle gap was obviously too much. turned back to the stops then did the 1/4turn as recommended on thesamba.com. and she fired up to idle at 800RPM. Happy days.

Love it John. I'm a bit surprised by the HT leads, I bought them new in 2011 also the fan belt is new in 2012. I'm buying from reputable part suppliers here but I'm beginning to wonder if they can' even send the right belt :run

My forearms we cut and bruised from elbow to wrist after changing that bloody belt as well :rollin

Hello,

So.. final engine checks before preparing for shipping...

Check that chokes are shut..

Switch on ignition..disconnect coil and measure current with ammeter..about 3 amps for the chokes is good.. check both sides.

Open throttle once .. check that the throttle stops are open and on the fast idle cams

Start up..the chokes should come off after about 2 mins..

Image

retry the throttle.. should come off fast idle to second step on cams..

check that the chokes are warming..by touch..

Image

Check with the airflow meter to see that the flow is the same both sides...

Then try disconnecting, one at a time, the leads to the fuel solenoids..

The drop in RPM should be about the same (not much)

Then once again with the throttle to come all the way off the fast idle cams.. and so have a tickover at 850 (manual) 950 (auto)

Thats it.. :)

I will be doing the video editing during the week..

and so.. to drain the oil, I thought I would try out my new pump from Lidl..

Image

The suction pipe fits inside the dipstick .. all the way to the sump..

When I drained the sump to see.. there was only about 100 ccs of oil left..

Image

Makes life easier.. 8)

New oil filter..

Image

Now my 'workshop' flywheel comes off..

Image

and the torque converter plate goes on..note the silicone oil seal (same as on a flywheel)

Image

get the crate ready..

Image

it is of the 'knock down' type with locking tabs..

Image

The motor is secured to the base..

Image

With the engine bar ends just peeking out...

Image

Crated up and ready to go....

Looking good - an invaluable guide for anyone building an engine!

A question, how do you recommend the engine is now broken in?

Cheers,

Alex

Back to me :ok John has been an absolute star throughout and I can't wait to get the van up and running again. If I ever have to buy another van I'm going to shop for a lovely rust free body and keep this engine :D
