All other things being equal, it all boils down to the specific fuel consumption rate of any given engine, at a given load. Load factor derived from wind resistance, gearing, and vehicle weight/payload.
Litres/hour @ xxxx revs @ xx % load
Highest torque output at specified rpm indicates peak efficiency point on the graph. That's the sweet spot to aim for when doing rpm vs. gearing calcs, as Aidan keeps trying to drum into everyone (and rightly so!)
That's why a wbx likes to be kept spinning "in the green" as peak torque comes in at about 2600-2800 rpm, then it get's "on the cam" and makes it's power. Well, whatever power's on offer anyway

Al, based on that you are getting 22.8mpg.

I just worked out the actual route, comes to 1087km
I make that 25.32mpg - is that right?
Seems about right, booting it on the motorway always seems to use more fuel than when pottering around. Wasn't hanging about on the way home either, just wanted it over with.

Well I ave a 1z and it does about 23 mpg with big injectors
However my BMW 320 efficient dynamics get a hard run every day and so far in 33000 miles it's averaged 57.6mpg - so hopefully that will end the 'I've got a bigger one than you' debate

I have an A6 TDi which is truly the most economical, comfortable and reliable vehicle I have ever owned. but that isn't the point.
There are two reasons I went TDI. One is getting 16-18 mpg is not affordable for a vehicle I want to use as much as possible and two to make it into something that is a pleasure to drive. Is there anything more practical and fun than a 4wd camper that is economical and has bags of power?
Also a Syncro with an oil burner and a whistling turbo sounds the nuts!

I'm still trying to fathom out why diesel syncro owners seem to be incapable of honestly reporting their returned mileage? "A bit over two tanks" becomes 120 litres, then a 950 km trip gains another 100 on closer inspection...
Come on chaps, play the game!
Never mind pence per mile, but I suppose no-one wants to discuss that

2.1 MV
70L @ £1.36 = £95.20
248Mi per tank = 17.71MPG
= £0.383 PMi
ETDI AFN
70L @ £1.42 = £99.4
424Mi per tank = 30.11MPG
= £0.234 PMi
Saving of 14.9p per mile.
I feel there is room for improvement on the diesel figures.
