This will be my final post on this topic.
Retorqued the cylinder heads this morning and set tappets. Engine running really smooth. Will change oil and filter tomorrow.
Summary of costs for engine rebuild.
Gasket set, oil pump, piston rings, seals, clutch plate housing and release bearing, rocker covers. £345
Hoses £38
Oil pump cover plate & nuts £24
Skim/machine heads £100
Clutch operating arm £26
Gearbox seals/bushes £44
Clutch MC & Slave £125
Total £702 for first attempt at rebuild.
When I then had to buy new heads this added £631. Think I would always recommend replacement heads as I ended up wasting a lot of time messing about with old heads which included the skimming. Both heads had cracks between the valve seats and this proved to be the reason for my original problem of coolant pressurisation.
So total removing the skim costs is £1,233 for the engine rebuild.
Did not include the costs for new exhaust system £476 as most people would get away with refitting old system.
Now hope to get some use out of the van starting with Danby Wiske this weekend.
Thanks to everyone who passed on advice during rebuild and hopefully this blog will be a help to others.
