INFLAMMATORY CONTRIBUTION WARNING!
Our '54 plate swb Vito (110 bhp, 4 cyl 2.2 16v with variable turbo) does 70 at 2.5k in 6th

Cruising at this speed on the m'way and driving sensibly returns an honest 35 mpg. On Saturday I took an engine crane and drove Woking-Llanfillyn (load up with 5-pot, wbx, 5-speed trans)-Gloucester-Swindon-Woking and did that on £75 of derv. Beat that.
(Now you all know that I don't do diesel, but this one does eat up the miles with me in comfort. I drive a petrol T3 for pleasure, not because I have no choice

I drove Surrey to Perth (Scotland), van full of bits and bobs, bicycles etc - almost non-stop, cruising 65-70 @ 3000-3200 revs and still had some fuel left, not much as I squeezed 63 litres in the tank, with the arm rests down and a brick on the pedal, nothing more comfortable to drive. After 4 years on noisy mud terrains these AT's feel like I am driving in a library.

I am actually very happy for you chaps. You say potato, I say kartoffeln etc. The downside is that it looks like I will now be the slow one bringing up the rear in any convoy, instead of Lloydy or Tom

unless the Westy boys are overloaded with creature comforts a per usual?
I'm just jealous really

You mean Kartoffel. Kartoffeln is plural. And the K in both cases should be capitalised:D

I'll still be the slowest, 60mph at 3000rpm so no worries there

Although now i'll just be tickling the throttle and getting 70mpg, or am i getting my calcs wrong?

I did, la salle les alps, serre chevalier to Dunkirk, 974km on just over 2 tanks of diesel, which I was quite happy with!

Kilometres ...big numbers to impress the girls eh Al?
974 km / 150 litres (?) = 606 miles / 33 gallons = 18.4 mpg (is that correct?)

That's what I was trying to say. More is better! More revs, more power, more cylinders

That works out to be 19.5mpg roughly.
Depending on Jakes route his at worst is 31mpg.

And for some reason I get much better mpg when driving in europe, I could swear I nearly got 500+ miles out of the tank once, that was a lazy few days on long windy french back roads doing 50mph I don't really measure too much, I have to drive somewhere so I stick the fuel in

Doing 50 mph would be much more wallet friendly, we all know that pushing past 60 mph or 100km/h is where it all goes wrong. So where are all these 40mpg TDi figures coming from then?

Best I got on a rough calc was 37-38 - a real slow europe day, although that was loaded with bikes and a kayak on the roof. Would love to see what you would get in a tintop 2wd well geared with a TDi.

Nah, that's all that Gmaps will give me on my phone if I search anywhere in Europe, annoying init.
Anyway, that distance from Gmaps can't be right, I'll have a look at the route once I'm not at work, I was getting a pretty consistent 27mpg the rest of the trip and can't imagine the final leg was much different.
This was all at about 3000-3200rpm, 60-65mph, with a load of stuff on the roof, full water all that schnizel.
Oh and when I said just over 2tanks, I mean 'just' over. I filled up just before I left from on the red, then filled up once in the UK at the tescos near St margarets. (obviously with a fill in-between)
Put in 55l both fills, so I would guess at not much more than 120l used for the distance what does that work out at?
(just checked the route my phone worked out, it's nothing like the route we took)

That's a bit different then, I was working on a "ran it as low as I dared each time" basis then plussed on a couple of gallons. I thought that you guys would get more than 19 mpg!
The carbed wasser honestly gets 26-27 mpg but it won't pull more than 65 mph on the flat. Economy, but no performance

I could improve it with similar sized road tyres for less drag and making/fitting a front bash guard or deflector. Probably adds a bit to the wind resistance once up to ramming speed.

So, thinking out loud then. With the wind resistance being pretty bad on these vans, is it possible that a lower geared van will be more efficient at 3000rpm than a taller geared van at the same rpm?
