Photos request - rear 3 point seat belts

Post by rubarb »

I'm installing 3 point belts at the rear. The nearside seems to be simple enough but the one through the cupboard is causing a headache. I've checked the wiki and there are some good articles/suggestions. Unfortunately, the photos can't be accessed. Can anyone with photos please upload to help me?

Thanks

Yes. Checked wiki and archived. Sorry it was in the archived that I couldn't access the photos. A few folk posted suggestions and it would be good to see what they were meaning.

We didn't fit one on the cupboard side - we ran both from the sliding door side to replace the lap belts that were fitted when we got the van. The one nearest the door uses the Brickwerks kit with the retractor fitted behind the lining panel so it is out of the way of the bed. The other belt, furthest from the door was fitted by: Seat Belt Service. The retractor is mounted half way up the rear pillar out of the way, with the pillar loop above, and the webbing belt has two tongues which clip into two receivers fitted to the old lap belt attachment points - this image on their site shows the retractor in position.

It's worth noting that if you're fitting belts in the back for child seats, then you should try to get receivers with short 'stalks', so that the receiver body only just sticks up above the surface of the seat. Receivers with longer 'stalks' are fine for adults using the belts but because of the way the seatbelt routes through the base of some child seats we had a problem with one of ours in that it prevented the seatbelt holding the child seat tight to the bench.

They look great and out the way. Where did you buy them? I bought 2 from Brickworks but may return one now.
Thanks

They brought the kit with all the necessary bits with them for the installation, which they did at my home. I don't know whether they'd be willing to sell you a kit for fitting, as I'm guessing you're a bit outside their area for a home visit - but there's no real harm in asking. We got them to come and fit it rather than look for a kit of parts because it was the easiest option, but it's also nice to know that it's a certified installation.

In terms of the fitting process it was pretty quick. They basically got access to put a couple of seatbelt anchor points in the rear pillar by going through the offside rear air vent from outside. They used an approx 6mm drill bit from the inside for the positioning first, followed by a hole-cutter with guide pin to cut a larger hole through the inside lining panels for clearance, followed by a step drill to enlarge the hole through the pillar itself to the right size. Then it was just a case of lining the plate up on the back and bolting through from the inside. They didn't even weld the plate in position they just tightened it to the correct torque - a step washer on the loop anchor bolt allows it to still pivot.
