I am especially interested in what VW recon about how deep is suggested safe for a diesel really.

Depends on speed and wake you produce... if you stop, whatever is the height of your air intake - a back-wash wave, say about 600mm (2 ft in pagan terms), but maybe a bit more if you keep pushing fwd steadily... went thro a good 2ft in Lincs recently we reckon, that was what the CoC said it was, measured with a stick
I'm not sure VW ever gave a definitive figure, although I notice the T5 4-motion is quoted as 300mm for wading (or 1ft in real language, what a cockeye system that requires you to divide up sensible chunks of sizeness into 1,000ths* )

Warning: Interest rates and advice vary, I'd go through anything I felt the Doka had the power to push through pretty well, but a steady 3ft is a LOT of water if that is the true depth, as is 30". 24 ~27" always give it a go!

Where have you arranged your air-intake (assuming everything else is sealed tight)... No, I don't worry about freezing the turbo, never going to go from M-way cruising to deep wading within minutes anyway... but have heard of thermal shock (get it quite often, usually early in't morn in't winter on't lotty!)

I am thinking of putting the air filter in the bottom of the wardrobe if i ever get round to reconnecting the charge cooler. I have been collecting a few manuals over the last couple of months and i have the sales brochure from a 1.9 petrol syncro. It gives quite abit of technical data,

Fording Depth= 350mm
Hill climbing ability with full load 185 r 14 c tyres 54%
205 r 14 c tyres 60%
Approach/Depart angle= 22/19*
Turning circle= 10.9m
etc etc.....

Just wondered if anyone knew the figure for a diesel.

Not good enough mate,the same difference from the center to the end times two doesnt work for me. Vw figures please

No you cant.
A diesel actually has a shallower wading depth than a petrol according to VW but not the rest of us.
This is due to the low slung turbo.

I agree especially while following you and Jake last year in Wales. I had to stop loads to dry the dizzy off, actually it happened alot last year.

The figures, according to my drivers manual (1991) is 200mm for a diesel, 290 mm for petrol injection engines, and 350 for carburated.

Maybe... But mine does have an ecu... in a much simpler format as it has the 2E4 carb with idle stabilisation...
Coped well with the water at my local event a few weeks ago.. and had water in the locker.... more work to be done...

Jed you should speak to Irish Paul, he has done this with his. Very tidy set up and still uses the original snorkel (and a few original parts for the 90° bends)
