Heater cables

Has anyone changed the heater cables before? How hard is it and does the dash need to come out?

The one controlling the temperature has got a kink in it and will turn the heat on but when you slide it back to cold it just bends and pops off the lever. I think it was caused as the cable is very tight past the stereo, and has to be forced out of the way to get the stereo in.

I've got an early van with 3 levers did VW modify the controls in the later vans?

Hi

hopefully this link will work?

http://www.benplace.com/dash.htm

In short, you dont HAVE to remove all the dash, but stereo out of the 'ole would help!

The three levers all have a small screw clamp on their ends, and the cables are sheathed like bicycle brake cables. The end of the sheath is clamped (to the left of) near the levers and the free end of the cable (which is actually a thin 'rod') goes to the end of lever and is clamped there. Mine broke there and I managed to get the end of the cable out through the lever slot, so I can use the cold/hot facility via a pair of pliers!

Having started to dismantle mine it seems the whole lever system should come out as a single unit, but Im sure someone else will have tackled this before!

Where are you based, if close this could be a mini techenders type weekend job for both vans!?

Hi, thanks for the reply, I have spent most of Sunday afternoon playing with the heater, not fun driving 50 miles at midday with the heater stuck on full!
I can get to the cables at the control end and can close the valve with pliers, the cable has kinked about half way down the exposed bit, with the stereo out it works but is really stiff, as soon as the stereo goes back in it pushes against the cable bending it and then the cable doesn't go into the outer it just bends and pops off the lever.
I am either going to have to modify the control unit to clamp the cable a bit higher so it clears the stereo or replace the cable.
I live just outside Leicester so a bit far from Sussex, although I did grow up in Steyning.
