1Y out, 1Y in...

Well, the end to quite a wierd weekend. I was really looking forward to having a go at changing an engine myself - i took friday off work and started the project with the help of my dad in his garage.

Took no time at all to get the engine out:
- Used my new flexible hose clamp tool to get the pipes off,
- disconnected the electrics,
- whipped out the alternator
- expansion tank removed
- gear box supported with a ratchet strap and scafold bar
- engine mount removed from brace on sump side
- engine brace removed from inlet side
- engine lowered onto old carpet
- Jacked up back of van and slid out engine.

Then the fun began stripping off the bits from the old 1Y to the new one.
This takes ages.

Annoyingly, On saturday morning, while putting on a new cam belt and setting the timing, we found that when turning the engine over it fouled with something metal. Initially this was because the valves were completely out of sync with the pistons. Anyhow, set up the timing, turned over engine and clunk. The enginw would not turn over at all.

Obviously a bent valve or something. Great, i had bought a duff engine. Not a real suprise, but i was still a bit upset having spent 8 or so hours on the engine change.

So, i headed off home in a bad mood and tried to source another engine.
About 8pm my Dad phoned up - he had taken off the sump and saw that one of the pistons was fouling on the new oil pump (GSF's finest - should have got OEM i know, but now i've learnt me lesson the hard way!).

So, oil pump grinded and it was game on - the engine was good after all!!

So, first thing today we got around to completing the engine change and fitted it in the van.

I was very nervous about starting it up - if the engine was a non runner now i'd be seriously gutted! Need'nt have worried though - the van started straight away and the smoke soon cleared up. It felt good!!!

Messed around with the accelerator lever on the fuel pump so it clears the lid and then took it for a test drive. All seems well!

I cant help but worry. Now im just looking for water and oil leaks!

Thanks to philpacman for advise and support.

Im off to bed for an hour then a curry!!

These should fit your 1Y
Click
Shadek oil pumps from GSF do need clearancing, I have used plenty of them and have had no problems with them at all.
I do however now have a reliable source of VW style pumps at GSF money, just another of those things I need to add to the webshop.

At last, something to make this a whole lot easier for Joe Public. Finally! Too late for me now - but i'll be after one when i get a AAZ.

I wish i knew about the oil pump issue before - it would have made my weekend a lot less stressful!!!

All i need now is someone to provide a "diesel conversion kit" so i can put all the diesel ancillaries on my spare engine now. I reckon i can do an engine swap in less than a day. TBH, i'd rather change an engine than change the sodding glow plugs:)

Cheers

If you can do an engine swap in a day you can have a job.
Ours take 3-4 days, solid.

I reckon it took two hours to drop the engine out and three hours to put it in - i struggled getting the engine in a bit but that was just inexperience.

Swapping over the sump, flywheel, clutch, cam belt, new gaskets, ancillaries etc took me a day. As the van is mine, im going to be testing the job and fixing the leaks for the next few years :)

So yeah, 3-4 days for a guaranteed job seems about right.

ringo, would love to hear how you get on with the new engine, crusing speeds and mpg.

Not sure about my setup as i don't trust it over 60 mph, maybe i should as it runs really well, but unsure of giving her a bit of a rev.

Yes, the oil leaks will come and go, i'm still sorting out a few and i've had the engine running now for the past 3 months!

The dubs always leave their mark

Well, im hoping this 1Y is better than my last one on Fuel. I set the timing up while doing the cam belt change so im hoping thats going to improve things.
Before, i was getting late 20's MPG.

Regards to speed, i tend to drive them like i've stolen it. This may be why my last 1Y failed after 20k miles in my van. However, i have no history of the engine and i suspect it was high mileage before i put it in my van. Saying that - max speed is probably around 65. Its all limited to my 4 speed gear box.

I drive 20k a year at the moment - so for £175 for the last engine, im quite pleased.

Sorry mate - my Dad was kind of hasty to get the old lump out of his garage so he took it to the scrappy.

Where is the engine number?

Or is this your problem?
