not a very fun job, but got it out, got to order a new filler neck seal, luckaly they are still available from vw for pick ups, and a new pair of sender seals from baxter as the self distructed when removing the sender.
no too much rust behind the tank, this will be delt with in the morning
enigine and all the ecu wires were saved apart from one wire which i had too cut
ring gear removed from the old fly wheel and installed on the new one. new H/T bolts for the fly wheel and new clutch.
nice big bench with the stuff to be installed

Well done! I guess the trial fit of the mounting brackets went OK then. Sorry I couldn't be there to help out - had to go into work to do some setting for Monday...
Mine looks a lot rustier underneath now the tank's out

A certain 'last RHD Syncro' is being referred to here and it is number 4 on a list of vehicles to be attended to!

Bloody hell
How does that alternator get on being submerged in water alot of the time? Never really looked how these fit in before.

I wonder why VW didnt design this area the same way as Rootes did with the Hillman Imp!

There's a good opportunity for someone to design a remote take-off electric water pump there...good enough for modern WRC cars, if you're worrried about reliability
Would save the valance chop, but too late for this one.

it does get a bit soggy but there is room to put it on the other side of the engine, higher up. i think neil and i are both gonna make that move at some point...

What do you recon would happen to it if it went through thick muddy silt like 10 second into this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33WGHwOVk6s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Does the petrol engine bash plate fit back on? If so how is the part of the engine protected where it sticks right out over the back of the engine mounting bar? What would happen if you came across something like this (the whole weight of the van being dropped on a couple of feetonto the engine area) 9.00 onward?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es3bejROzLA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Interesting idea this engine but not sure about the hack and how practical it would be, how do you lock the engine lid? is that a cut out on the inside of the door too? Is there only the bumper across the back then?
Sorry for all the questions, I havnt really see this before (i am sure lots have asked about it) and I am getting quite into doing abit of mechanical bits and bobs and you seem to be the only person on here that has used one up to date to ask.

seemed to cope in Wales ok (ish) on the first
day we went thru deep water twice and seemed to cope ok,( i think your group went through that bit on sunday)
once the alternator is raised, all shall be good ( it is a worry at the mo). there is no engine bash plate at the mo, im going to make something but the sump sits lower than bar

i carry a spare sump with me
the engine lid on my is unlocked and yes there is a cut out of the lid too
http://s922.photobucket.com/albums/ad70 ... AG0009.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
there is only a bumper across the back but thats something im gonna mod too, after ive finished mounting these new bullbars ( gotta play around with the front bash plate so i can drop it of without messing with the bars and id like it flip down too - no nuts, as it seems to be on and off weekly at the mo.
the benefits with the volvo is the power and reliability ( and simplicity ) although its one heavy sucker as im sure neil is finding out as we speak. we put the new one in with a trolley jack under the gearbox and another under the engine and three men holding it up (it really didnt want to sit nicley on the jack and the 3 of us arent short on muscle but there was struggle and foul language till the studs went thru. i think neil said he is using a crane.
i really need that power as i load the back of my wagon to loads that might raise an eyebrow, but it works great.

the only thing that really might put some folk off is the noise, its really loud. i love it myself, but have to go easy when i roll up late on my street.

heres a couple more pics of it when we put the new one in...

and one from the top, a few lads from the IG forum were very intersed in it, i didnt know that it was that rare, although from the swedish paper work says as soon as it was built and brought to sweden they put the volvo engine in straight away ( when the van was 3 months old !) i guess thats the way they like them over there! i just did a like for like swap - notice the bent sill round the bay, it didnt want to come out and we had a lot of pinch bar action!

When CJ had his sweedish volvo powered single cab he said it was the nicest engine he had had in a syncro. Think the authorities pretty much converted them from new.

joe you have all the standard petrol protection on your van, the oil burners have a different type witch is much more enclosed, the altenator is the only thing that needs to be thought about, i an looking and waiting for some parts from norway to ariive and it can be located on the other side (inlet instead of exhaust) and it is mounted higher. as per the video in wales where the back sections of jakes, russle and jeds vans all hit the rock it looks as jeds van the exhaust that was the the part that made contact, this should not happen with this install, if any thing the departure angle will be increased, by the removal of the whole vw designed system that snakes around the van, as for the engine hatch this will work to be lockable, well as lockable as it was before i started, remember that the catch is a non lockable one on my van,(as is joe's i think?). and the valence will be a bolt on section. (removable)
here is a pic of joe's van with the engine insatlled to give you an idea
will post up later with todays update
