1985 14" DG Syncro



I'd be grateful for some advice please.

I'm upgrading my original horn to something a bit less weedy - is the original horn earth activated or positive activated.

I've fitted dual-tone horns from late-90's Golf or Passat to mine. Extra wire is needed from the relay plate to the horns, as they're quite juicy and need full voltage to operate properly. There's a relay to add to the relay plate, and I followed the factory wiring, as for the T3 Carat. Well worth it. Toot toot !

PS. Doing it the 'tidy way' means just rejigging a few connections at the back of the relay plate and adding a new connector 'L', which may be a bit hard to find, it is used in Golf 1 and early Golf 2 dash harnesses. A possibly simpler alternative may be just add a separate relay and wire directly to that.

I have a Strebel Nautilus (with relay) fitted where the original 2WD hooter was.

More than loud enough.

I also have a Strebel horn and as said it's more than enough, its one of the best upgrades I've done. It's an easy job to take a live feed from the battery and fit a relay, well worth it.

I find the original horn unique, loud and irritating.

Every thing you need in an "I'm here" noise.

Earth activated.

Yes earth switched

earth switched as in the horn push on the steering wheeel grounds the horn circuit.
you will find at the standard horn 12v on one terminal and the other wire goes via the steering wheel horn push to ground at the steering column.

had 2 tone horns for a year not got around to fitting yet, don't use it much, deffo needs relay though.

thanks bigherb and itchy feet - I had the horns for a while and got sick of the dust on them - I wish I'd got a Strebel Nautilus though - if only for the name..

As it needs a 30 amp relay - does that mean I need 30amp wire as well. It seems easier to wire straight the battery or am I missing something?

You would still need to uprate the horn push contacts and the earth from the horn if not using a relay. A relay would be simpler by utilizing the stock wiring+ horn push and then running the uprated wire to the relay and horn.

Depends on what horns your fitting but 1.5mm2 would be enough.
