If so how are they adjusted?

I'm pretty sure they are hydraulic & you can't adjust them as such. They fill up with oil to take up the "slack" in the valvetrain. It's when they stick (usual failure mode) that you get the tapping noise. I don't know whether there's a baseline setting from which the hydraulics start that might be adjustable. Sometimes they can be made to un-stick by using engine oil flush before an oil change.

The OE/Haynes setting is 2 turns in from just touching.. personally I use 1/2 turn, this has been discussed on "boston bobs" engine site in the USA..

Also....when was the last time you changed the oil and filter, that can make a difference as well......and use decent oil, I use Quantum in mine since its rebuild. 8)

They will be 'clacky' if the engine /van has been sat a while or the oil level is low, and genrally a lille noisy in operation anyway.

I was advised by a garage I trust 99.99% (T Wilson in Chesterfield) NEVER to try adjusting them. They are self adjusting and fiddling will just cause problems.
