Spend / Sales.
If I sell all the spare parts that came with it for a fair price, I’ll end up with a nice Singlecab in the garage and £400 in the red; to date. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s all gravy.
+ my fun fixing it = priceless.

I need to transfer this clutch slave bracket off this diesel gearbox and onto the gearbox in the vehicle. Do I need to punch out the release bearing arm to do this?

Offered this stuff up on the bay of fleas. Diesel engine carriers came up, ok.

I could not remove the arm from the release shaft with reasonable force , so I found it easier to release the release shaft circlip located inside the bell housing ,slide the shaft partly out then it was possible for the bracket to wiggle past the arm whilst still attached to the shaft.
Are you aware that the petrol bracket is not the same as the diesel one?

Oh, no - I was not aware. That’s great info., I’ll leave it be then and get a petrol bracket.

^^ Diesel Bell Housing
^^ Petrol Bell Housing (spare gearbox)
Therefore, I just need to swap the bell housing over and take the bracket with it.
^^ Petrol Bracket
^^ Diesel Bracket
(Bit of a head scratcher, that one !!)
So, the previous owner bought the ALD gearbox to take the bell housing off it, in order to marry it up to the replacement TDI. But wanted to keep the petrol 5-speed box, hence the bell housing swap.

Next task is to slide old TDI engine out from underneath & move it 1000 yards, up some steps etc to my back yard to play with later. Normally Wilbur would pop round and we would do this 2 man lift into a wheel barrow, but with current restrictions I'll have to do this on my own and I'm not sure how/if that's possible...any ideas gratefully welcome. It weighs a lot!
FYI, I'm the guy on the right

Good progress there Martin
.
With regards to moving the engine, i'll be honest mate that until you can get any help i'd be inclined to remove and leave it in your garage if you can and start the tinkering there. Last thing you want to do is damage your back trying to clean and jerk a TDi lump!

I’ve got about; well zero space to leave it in there and won’t be putting it on the bed. I’ll think of something. I really should just put it up for a feeebie and leave it on a pallet. The Engineer in me wants to pull it apart and see how it works, that’s all. That feeling will pass - I hope.

I think this is a painting as opposed to a photograph. Reminded me a bit of the Richard Sealey ‘keep your Volkswagen alive’ manuals.

Got the petrol bell housing off the spare ALD gearbox, just need to get the diesel bell housing off the gearbox in it now. I’ll need to either remove it, stand it on its end & take the bell housing off or remove all the oil first.
Refurbished this 4-speed mounting bracket while I was at it.
