Idle stabilizer......

more likely ignition than the cam being out

Occam's razor I thought, and assumed it was expressed in support of the cam being out

Occam's Razor - check and eliminate the simplest solutions first.......

Not sure if it's the cam

Well, every day is a school day. In my 54 years I've never heard of this, and I'm not sure how I've missed it as it's the sort of stuff I usually know, so thanks for plugging that gap!

Have you checked your battery voltage static, running at 1500rpm and then at 4000?
The reason is that if your alternator is failing due to brush wear, Its voltage performance will decline with revs/demand. Low voltage can have bizarre manifestations.
Good luck with it, flipping hate these sort of problems.

Hi All, sorry i haven't posted in ages, been manic at work and it saps most of my motivation for projects.

After all the helpful advice on here i looked into getting a dial guage to measure lift but the price was too high for me and i'd probably screw up the valve measurement technique. I'm planning on moving from here next year and we have different Reg requirements (no MOT!) so i'm planning to sell it and get a new one! Because of that i don't really want to spend too much more money on it and just enjoy cruising about in it. Aside from the timing being off still, it runs fine once it's warmed up (sluggish on the auto choke as the coolant part was bypassed due to corrosian and just relying on the bi metallic metal thingy). I ordered a piston stop to see if true TDC matches the markings but it wasn't long enough to stop the pistons! Turns out they're mostly made for chainsaws and motorbikes so they don't tend to be too long.

So yeah, basically it's running well enough (i think) not overheating and oil is staying the same level, and will hopefully last until spring. Due to the condition it's in I won't be able to sell it for much regardless so not worth putting too much more money and time in.

Bit of an underwhelming update unfortunately
