Cheers Justin,
Gradually building confidence. Much thanks to all answering my numpty rebuild questions though. As you see new rings are fitting nicely now lve properly cleaned groove  rapidly using up my lifespan of this emoji :D
There is so much to consider when doing the first rebuild. But am enjoying the experience, despite often having to read up on parts three or four times before it finally sinks in to my pea size grey matter  .
Still not got my head round setting end float yet.

The day ended on a downer though. See photos.

Front tyre puncture on the CBF. Not a nice feeling

Image

Then a gust of wind took my Suomi crash helmet off the saddle. Wrecked front vent and lost latch holding one side of visor. Searched everywhere for it but disappeared
into grass verge.

No way mate, what a pain in the backside, that wind has been pretty brutal the last couple of days. Can you repair the tyre with a bung for the moment?

Engine rebuild is looking good Stu and as they say a silly question is only one that isn’t asked!

Back to the slowest head seal replacement on record.
All sleeves back in with black and green seals fitted.

Image

Spent the afternoon cleaning, cleaning cleaning! Head nuts tapped out and a dye driven down each stud. Squeaky clean

Image

Then found one nut recessed for a seal?
Why? I did see the small seal. But now lost.

Image

Moved on to more cleaning of heads. And maybe found why exhaust gases were entering the cooling system.
What's the forums' view on this? Exactly under the fire ring. Will a slip of Holymar AF see this off.

Image

Lastly, how does one release front crank pulley without a flywheel attached? I need to replace it with a spare PAS one.

I appreciate all readers' comments.
Regards
Stuart

Want to hear a funny feck up? I gave my mate the wrong head to pillar drill and tap out holes for PAS mounts :rofl
Oh yeeeeeah!
Least l saw it before heads go back on. Will swap them round. Oh dear

That nut's weird! I'd bin it and reach for my box of 50 spares, but I guess you don't have that box? Maybe order a new nut?
As for the pulley, pop the flywheel back on with 3 bolts and lock it with your locking tool over the stud (or a helper with a pry bar/big screwdriver). Method two is to put flywheel on and stick a big fat Philips screwdriver through the hole in the back of the case, & into a hole in the back of the flywheel. That'll be solid enough to undo the single pulley, but not to do up to the much higher torque of the triple pulley bolt. Don't forget the o-ring seal that goes behind a triple pulley!

I did this once, built the engine before I realised customer had PAS, and I'd fitted the drilled one the other side - aaarrgghhh!!!! So I just drilled and tapped in situ by eye, and it was no big deal in the end.

Thanks Andrew,

Got spare head nuts. But no flywheel. So l need a flywheel.
I know the triple PAS pulley is mega tight 350nm? What is the technique when it's on an engine stand? Or wait until its back in camper.
So swapping heads around is okay? Or do l need to drill and tap correct side?

Stuart

What about the minute dink in cylinder head? Where fire ring sits?
Image

As for the weird nut? Another fine product from Essex...say no more :?

I woulda thought if the ring sits over it, it shouldn't be a problem.
I'm looking forward to getting onto my build soon. Got the engine on a stand today, without a hoist which was.. uh interesting.
I'm totally not stealing ideas from you or anything.
:ok

I think it's the same as before, flat surfaces needed for a seal when a non compressive gasket is used. Clean it up and fill the void with chemical metal the damage is bad enough..... but it probably looks far worse on the picture than reality

Any recommendations?
