Eventually got round to first stage of Gear box oil change stage today, I have owned my camper for nearly 7 years and never got round to changing the gear box oil.  After spending ages trying to find out where the filler plug was located I was unable to remove it.  Limited access was an issue but managed to get the socket in place but would not move, then remembering an old method I turned the plug as if doing it up ie the opposite way and it budged a bit, a bit of turning back and forth and it came out quite easily.  I noticed that there was a milky substance on the plug and can only guess this is moisture or a bit of water has got in.  Tried the drain plug but no room for a socket so had to use a spanner again did not shift, eventually got a trolley jack under the spanner and gently put pressure on the spanner and it loosened the drain plug.  That's as far as I got as not got the oil yet, what is the recommended oil these days and who is the best supplier. Nearly forgot its a 4 speed manual.Tks T

I assume you had not run the vehicle up to temperature before trying to get the drain and more importantly the filler plugs out ? 
I have two head bolt nuts tightened onto a threaded bar and welded together so I can use a 17mm ring spanner , as well as a traditional 17mm Allen socket . 

normal procedure is to soak the bungs with plus gas for a few days prior to trying to open then if I doubt when they have last been opened ....

Only let it idle for a bit, as working underneath using ramps, will give it a proper warm up/run before I do the oil change.  I must buy some of that plus gas I tend to rely on other release agents.

Further to my last, just searched for Plus Gas, and equivalent types were offered from Halfords, Screw fix etc are these just as good even though they are cheaper or is it a case you get what you pay for

My grandfather put onto using Plusgas around 60 years ago, the only thing that was around when he was young and have not found any point in changing from something that works well.

I’ve used most of the cheap ones ( actually most of them are no cheaper) and plusgas is the one .
only thing even close to plusgas is a home made brew of kerosene, Brakefluid  and a secret ingredient . 

Plus gas it is then.  Still browsing for gear oil from various sellers, prices vary along with brands, Comma looks a good bet.

The secret ingredient to make nuts rust on tank tops on ships was to pee on them ( to try to foil Customs into thinking that it had not been opened)
Hot brake fluid on its own is quite effective if nothing else to hand.

Now I know what to do with all them old tins and partially used if not out of date brake fluid I seem to collect.

We used it as kids about 50 odd years ago, a friend's dad had a large box of containers.  It wasn't used as a releasing oil though

Someone once told me that diesel fuel/oil makes a good releasing agent.  Never tried it as I've not owned a diesel engined vehicle...

 TONYT25T25 As for gearbox oil how does Smith and Allen work out for price?

Kerosene is basically a more refined diesel , and it does work , but has next to no lubrication , hense the brake fluid
