I’m back, while I have learned a lot about these engines it still doesn’t run right.... by this I mean I can get it to tick over, but not with the airflow meter on, I can hold it at 3000 revs to time it, but it’s lumpy and had no power when I tried to drive it.

Here is what I know.

The engine is a 1.9 digijet but the car/ wiring harness/ airflow meter and ecu are all digifant.

Is this ever going to run with this set up? Do I need a digijet ecu and if so will that just plug in and solve all my problems (car related problems!)

it should run fine with the MV ecu running it as long as you have the digifant distributor with no vacuum advance;
have you got the valve preload on all cylinders correct, what's the compression like, sounds like it is a misfire type issue perhaps, what's the state of the disi cap, rotor, plugs and leads ? removing a lead one at a time from disicap whilst idling usually shows up the bad link as the engine note stays the same either disconnected or connected, be sure to insulate yourself from shock
wiring diagrams and Bentley manual which you should have are available online SirAdventure

I do, replaced the dizzy, leads, plugs, cap and rotor arm. Bought the Bentley manual and set the valve clearances to two turns in. Did the lead check, firing pretty evenly on all 4.

Compression test was ok, all within 10% of each other, also did a leak down test that was ok. Took the heads off and to a specialist who did a vacuum test, this was also all good.

Learnt all about hydraulic followers and stripped/ re oiled then all. (There were two I could compress by hand but all fixed now.)

Borrowed my mates ECU from a running van, also digifant, made no differnce....

So frustrating!!!!

Mine doesn't have an exhaust sensor, that likely to be an issue?

Yes. It'll run, but on default open loop fuelling map so always on the rich side.
You said you had a blue plug in the loom which was not connected to anything? Is that still the case? Could be temp2 sender plug. If that's disconnected it'll assume engine is cold, enrich the fuelling and increase idle speed.

Thanks mate, I sorted the blue plug dilemma. I have ordered a new temp sensor just to eliminate that but it can take a while to get stuff here. I’ll look into a lambda sensor, I know of a couple of wrecked 2.1’s that may still have them.

It's well into Sunday in Western Australia and I have been busy.

I found a lambda sensor removed it and cut out the thread and welded that into my exhaust.
Didn't seem to make much difference.

Following a thread on here I found a workshop manual for electrical and fuel, learned the micro switch on my throttle body didn't work at idle. I found one, cleaned it and fitted it.
Didn't seem to make much difference either!

I woke this morning thinking about fuel pressure regulators, I found one, fitted it and it seemed better.

I had set the timing to 30° at 3k revs as per the go westy advice but have found it runs better when retarded from that point (fair bit too!)

It's not 100% but pretty close, any other ideas?

And what is this and where should it be?

Is there meant to be a pic on the end of your post? I'm not seeing it.
