Delboy , depends on how much money you wanto spend , dont expect big gains without spending some money ,but they are very tunable,a good set of twin 36 webbers and a free flowing exhaust will gain you some usefull bhp ,or the next step balance the botom end and increse the cc and compression forged 96's pistons will give you a 2056cc without major changes to the rest of the botom end ,It's prolly best to have a read up, here is some links there's some american sites and type 4 engine is what youy have (CU code) http://www.tunacan.net/t4/index.shtml

http://www.johnmaherracing.co.uk/type4.htm

imho if you dont wanto break the bank then stick to makeing sure it runs spot on and never lean if it runs lean then that means HOT head and shortend engine life its what kills most AC engines ,fer about 80 quid you definatly should have it set up corectly on a roling road prolly the best 80 quid you will spend these guys know the type 4 well and have tuned mine and loads of other bus's http://www.raceshack.co.uk/index.php

then fit yerself a cylnder head temp guage and oil pressure and temp if you can cht guages and pyros here (fits under number 3 spark plug ) http://www.airworlduk.com/ do a search on here for a list of bits u need for cht guages i put a post up a week ago . fitting CHT guage is the best way to keep an eye on engine temps and as you prolly know the ac engine benifits from being driven with plenty of revvs and i mean plenty !! you could always go the whole hogg and spend a stupid amount and end up with something like mine by adding NITROSS !!
