I went down this road 18 months ago and listened to someone who advised me to take my van to XXXXX to get it rebuilt. I paid £250 to get it towed to them paid around £1200 all in with complete new clutch and exhaust. Days later it was leaking oil. Two 500 mile round trips later it still was not sorted and still leaking oil. Another 250 mile round trip seen another so called "recondition engine" in it. Tomorrow I am doing what I should have done 18 months ago VW Main Agent fully reconed engine with 2 year european warranty. Trust me I have been down every avenue to research this for the past month. Listen to the experts, Simon at BrickWerks advised this as did Beaker. Anything other than this you could be back to square one in less than 12 months like me

Replaced mine at the end of 2004, but listened to advice re re-con / new, new was only £200 more so took that option, mainly due to the fact that our aim was to go to the south of France in it, which we did on a tweleve hour journey. Five of us, trailer, 4 bikes, 2 surfboards and more and it didn't miss a beat or loose any oil / water at all. Pleased as punch. Now going again this year same place - 915 mile round trip.
My advice go for a new with 12 month warranty, not re-con but others may say different.
I had a genuine VW recon WBX in nearly 5yrs ago---over 40k miles still running--no probs---
