Pushrod seal advice

Post by maximillion »

Hi, changing the pushrod seals on my 81 air-cooled (CJ engine). I got the recommended seals from VW Heritage, and followed the wiki...

I got the tubes out ok, there was lots of sealer around them, so i have cleaned them up and fitted new seals, put a little grease around the seals and re inserted. My question is how far should they go in, i can still see the green seal at the top of the tube, and didn't feel them snap into place as suggested by the wiki, has anyone got a good photo or any advice how best to get them in.

Thanks!

Hi,

When I did this on our 1980 2.0l petrol Aircooled (CU), you will definely feel it 'pop' in at the end. I used a large flat bladed screw driver on the 'tip' of the pushrod tube and lent on this as hard as I could until I felt it go.

Might worth smearing the end of the pushrod tube with some general purpose grease to help... :ok

Good luck

Chris

Use an appropriate sized socket with a short extension and lightly tap them home. You will be able to tell when they are seated correctly when the tapping sound changes tone.
