Dorset coast ideas please :)

Hi we have decided that we are going to go away hopefully over easter and we would like to try the dorset coast. It is somewhere neither of us have any knowledge of.
We are going to have our 7 year old son with us - any campsites or places of interest recommended will be gratefully recieved.....

Lyme Regis is a nice spot and worth a visit, Jurrassic coast and good rock pooling. Beer just along the coast is a nice spot too. If I remember correctly, you can hire smallish boats and go out sea fishing from there.

Golden Cap Campsite. Seatown (Bridport)

Went there this spring. Right by the beach and the coastal path. grat pub overlooking beach and 2 mins walk from campsite.

You can walk in both directions form the campsite along the coastal path. We walked to Charmouth about 90 mins then took bus to Lyme Regis, then bus all the way back to campsite. Great day out.

we stayed at corfe castle good site next to village with castle and pubs and shops and steam train to swanage

Depends what you are looking for. If you want basic and cheap, try Steeple Leaze near Kimmeridge. no hook ups but a beautiful spot and they allow fires.

If you want more in the way of facilities, the site at Durdle door on the Lulworth Estate is a great spot.

We also like Osmington Mills, just east of weymouth.

We went to a site in Uplyme not far at all to Lyme Regis. Great bus service, nearby pub and a nice river stroll into lyme regis.

East Fleet Farm, just outside Weymouth. Has a small pub onsite. A decent play park for kids. And the bus into Weymouth comes through the site regularly.
It is a lovely family run site. It does get very popular in the school holidays, but is well situated.
We have been back several times

As above, East Fleet a goody, Golden Cap also mentioned and we love Durdle Door campsite, but if you have a seven year old the walks are pretty stiff, beautiful scenery though.

We stopped at Uplyme last year and it was ace, terraced pitches which were nice and private, loads o kids running around and havin fun which was perfect for our 2. Didnt see em most of the time we where there unless they wanted feeding. Perfect!!!!

We were down at Charmouth Beach this weekend and went on the fossil hunting tour run by the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre:

It was great fun - perfect for a seven year old interested in dinosaurs and fossils (and their Dad!).

LHD and I did the Jurassic coast a couple of years ago , it was cracking , didn't really plan anything ( as usual for me ,can't be doing with it ) ,
we stayed on a http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , temp holiday site which saved us £££ , as the sites are quite expensive in summer (you have to be a member BTW ).
We wild camped a few nights as well.

I'm from Brighton.....

As a family We stayed nr Durdle Door last april - we luckily hit the "tropical" week in april and loved it ! - In that area i have found it easy to find nice places to go and eat/drink so I wont spoil your adventure by saying where we went.

The millionaiires beach nr poole was lovely for a day but do the walk from durdle door to the iconic rock bridge - its amazing.

I plan to do a shakedown trip with my son as a 1st camping trip in that area for 2012 soon in april - we have a couple of furthur trips planned at least as a family this yr. I know some here knock the series by him but the martin dorey of one man campervan series really caught my 9 yr old sons imagination and he wants us to gather mussels - cook mackerel and cook them with me on an open fire (hopefully with a mind to the incoming tide).

Doing the school run every day in the camper we discuss the prospect of camping and what he undrstands to be called foraging without mum and his sister and he is sooooo exited at the prospect -

ThoughI recon I paid what some might consider over the odds for my camper - you really cant put a price on a vehicle that enables you to plan and execute these sorts of weekends away !!!!

Hi,

We are lucky enough to live and work here in Dorset so a few suggestions from us would be;
There is a nice campsite at durdle door, and lulworth cove (where i work for the MOD) is a must see. Just down the road is Tyneham village which was abandoned during WW2, and is now open to walk around (a bit like a ghost town) and find out what happened there. Bovington has got a brilliant tank museum which boys of all ages will love. Monkey world is good. All of these are within about 7 miles of each other.
Dorchester is nice and has the dinosaur museum.
Don't forget the olympic sailing events will be on at weymouth and portland, so lots going on there.
Abbotsbury is very pretty and has the swannery, tropical gardens and a brilliant car park for visiting chesil beach for a BBQ and spot of mackerel fishing. (Its easy and you will catch more than enough for your barby.)
