Has anyone any idea? I have had knocking from the left rear end of my van. I jacked it up and gave everything a good pull and shake put it back on its wheels and the noise went away, that was before christmas. Drove up to Norwich last week everything was fine but going to work today the noise was back. It seems to be speed related, ie the faster I go the quicker the knocking gets. I drove home and put my foot down to get up the last hill and the knocking got louder and louder, so I thought kill or cure ----and it stopped! got home fed the cats and went out again, all was well, so what could it be?

99% of the time it is the cv joints - do a search, plenty of posts on it. Also see wiki above (HERE

Re: knock knock
Yep, one or more CV joints. You can sometimes buy a little more time by pumping them with CV grease but failure is inevitable. Other possibility is loose CV bolts (usually at the wheel end) but if they check out ok you need to remove shaft/s and replace offending joints. Don't be tempted by some of the ones on ebay - quite a few are made of chocolate. I only finally cured mine by fitting s/h driveshafts bought at a VW event that I cleaned and repacked with grease. I can only assume they were good quality CV joints as I've had no probs since.
