MOT question

Post by Cyrus »

Will a bus pass an MOT with the rear bumper removed but not the brackets?
They stick out a fair bit so would it be deemed as dangerous?
Also what size are the original bumper bolts as i`ve lost mine

Cheers :ok

No if I was testing - and probably legally also.

You could try with bolting a strip of wood across in place of same. (My old Reliant van which was an oak framed body never failed on rust or woodworm)

I passed 3 years in a row without bumpers front and rear. There are stainless steal bolts on ebay for a few pounds.

But was that with the brackets protruding?

Just rang my son. He's an MOT tester. He said if there are sharp protruding edges he would have to consider whether or not they posed a threat to pedestrians etc. I bluntly asked "Would you pass my van without bumpers but with brackets still attached?". (He's seen my van in that state). He said he would fail it! Hope this helps.

It will pass, as long as the bumper was removed and not knocked off in an accident. Even if the remaining bumper irons have sharp edges, its still a pass and advise

Knew you'd come on here Ian. Just shows that the mot pass or fail relies on the opinion of the tester. And my opinion is that we should accept those opinions! It's so difficult to get all opinions together and agree. I read the testers manual once and it puts such an onus on the tester. Unfortunately if a vehicle passes a test ( and it gains all the ticks in the "manual") the police can still do you. eg: I believe a bald tyre can pass a test if it's a spare but police can do you because if you're carrying it you intend to use it (eg:if you get a puncture). Common sense needs to prevail but sadly it often doesn't!

Keith....you shouldn't have to use your opinion when testing, its all in the manual. And when used correctly is no problem, its when testers start using their opinions, that's when the problems start  As the VOSA man says...its all in the manual, use it!!

it would pass. the bumpr irons may be sharp big and hurt ya if you hit them, but are they caused by corrosion or damage. No, so it's a pass.

How about corrosion of a brake pipe? How corroded is failable? (Is that a word?). I reckon that would be down to the opinion of the tester. Now, if there was a machine /meter which tested the depth of corrosion...
Personally I feel that protruding brackets would present a danger...... (to any idiot who walks in front of/ behind me).

to change the subject slightly,
was in a customers garage today and he had a mint beetle in there. 1950 something oval cali thing ( not good with bugs )with a 350 bhp drag engine in it. the exhaust pipe came out the back by about a foot and then went back in again. i said that it surely cant have an mot as it has a boiling hot pipe sticking straight out of the back but he just said the mot tester said it is no different to a sports bike?
thoughts?

also had some porsche speedster thing in it. worst thing is, he beat me down on the price of his rewire cause he said he was skint. :( fair play to him. must make a mental note to check in a punters garage before haggling :D
