Dave i have been reading your thread about which way the 1Y water pump rotates. When i fitted the 1Y engine to my van i used the JX pulleys and water pump reason being it helps to protect the cog crank bolt .Some 1Y alternater and pulley have this free wheeler device which then dosnt drag on the crank cog bottom bolt.I suspect that on a 1Y engine and looking at how the ribbed auxillary belt is fitted it turns the pump anti clock wise.If you look at how the vbelt is fitted to cs/jx pulleys it turns the water pump clockwise.I no that a 1y engine water pump wont accept a cs/jx pulley the bolt flange is a diffrent size.So provided the ribbed auxillary belt is fitted correctly to the 1y pulleys the water pump should flow the coolent in the right direction.

Thanks camper.i couldnt find a diagram to show the setup so I dont know the right or wrong way...seems a bit odd the ribbed opart of the belt was running on the smooth surface of the pulley

Aye,that is the way I have it fitted at themoment.so it looks like the past few years its been runnin the wrong way.it didnt really effect the temp but surely I couldnt have had the right pressure....had it been in any other engine im sure it would have overheated it
I took it for a run last night expecting it to over heat if it was the wrong way but the temp guage went to half way and stayed there..rock solid...before it fluxuated between quatre and half...so im guessing it had been running backwards before..oh well you live and learn
Thanks for the pic camper

If you take the pump off you can see which way it should rotate.

Here's a picture of an anticlockwise pump (smooth side of belt drives water pump pulley). The coolant gets swirled around and out of the outlet pipe at the top towards the engine.

You might be able to see without taking it out. Outlet pipe off the bottom towards the engine means it goes round the other way.

Incidentally, being basically centrifugal, the pump still pumps in the same direction if it rotates backwards, just not very well.

I've just had a look at both types, and, no, you can't really tell from the outside which is which, so you'll have to take it off to find out for sure.

thanks for looking guys..its certainly an odd one aint it.

mike..did the water pump pulley on your golf have the ribs on it to accommodate the belt or was it smooth ?

the odd thing about mine was the belt was slightly loose when i had it running round the right hand side of the pulley and the alt wouldnt adjust up enough to get it tight(its the one with the spring under it)..so i thought the belt must have worn or it was the wrong one to begin with..but with it running round the left side of the pulley it is a perfect fit.

it might end up me having to strip it down and see if it is the right way.

if anyone has a haynes manual with the 1y engine could you please take a look and find out for me pls :ok

I have to say that I'm fairly sure that a 1y has the smooth side of the belt on the water pump pulley.

I can post pictures of mine if you like. If the ribbed side was meant to be on the pulley then it would be ribbed to correspond
